On a lighter note, what’s in a name?
Plenty. Isn’t that the reason Jabez in the Bible insisted on changing his name? Of all the culprit lecturers indicted in Unilag over the #sexforgrades docu, how come only one face is now used as posterboy for #sexforgrades?
Dr Boniface’s face is the face that pops up once you type sexforgrades, ask Google and you’ll soon find out for yourself. What a way to become the poster child for this kind of s***t!
So, no point rehashing what you already know but since the recent outrage after the BBC documentary expose #sexforgrades, I’ve been feeling a wee bit sorry for Dr Boniface Igbeneghu. I believe if his name had no ‘face’ in it, he might have been one of the names not exposed but mentioned in hushed tones…Dr so and so is also among lecturers who demand sex for grades…yeah? And Prof so and so as well…
How did I arrive at this conclusion?
Listening to former students and reading up on comments from victims and their friends, Dr Boniface, it seems, isn’t the most notorious of these lecturers who demand sex for grades at Unilag; former students claim not to know him, meaning his notoriety hasn’t gained wings abroad. Should this then be a reason to drop him as our poster boy? No, just saying that if he isn’t so known like so many others that are notorious for demanding sex for grades, how come he became the fall guy?
How come the more notorious one, like the one who rehashes his sexcapadeds during his lecture time to students, for instance, why couldn’t that Prof be the posterchild?
On Twitter and other outlets, former students are outing the real preys, victims are talking; those who either fell into the hands of these lecherous old daddies; those who escaped their trembling hands on their breasts by the skin of their teeth or those who were witnesses to the victimsation of their colleagues.
While these may seem as nothing more than mere rants from former students, the university authority cannot pretend and continue to turn a blind eye to these allegations.
I wager if Dr Boniface had been a Dr Albert or Gavin or some odd name and not Boniface, his face wouldn’t be what Google will pop up so quickly
But he is Boniface!
He’s got the face for it!
When I think about it, I wonder what was going on in Boniface’s mind as he conducted that prayer shaking his two legs, no make that, his three legs at the girl in front of him; same way he was fondling another girls breasts as he prepared a sermon for his flock at Foursquare church; that’s when God decided to spit in his face!
I guess we should thank him for falling so easily for another pretty young thing. I guess we should thank him for all the sordid revelations we heard on tape, the ‘cold room’, the rampant sale of marks for sex…we should thank Boniface for his sacrifice.
More to the issue though, its really disturbing that other culprits named are Doctors, learned men in their fields of study; men who have distinguished themselves in academic circles; the ones the society should normally rely on to be the voices of reason in the midst of chaos…it’s the same men who’ve consistently preyed on girls; these two- faced men have somehow avoided being caught yet again; and that is because before now, their names were mentioned in hushed tones because victims are scared.
But BBC and the rest of Nigerians are waiting for the outcomes; we are waiting for the authorities at Unilag to make their move; so far there are claims that they are scandalized by this, we believe them, we sincerely believe that despite the many reports, they are acting scandalized by the report.
Let’s hope that these men, described as people’s daddies, will be investigated and if found culpable, will face prosecution or heavy sanctions where victims are scared to step forward.
Boniface should look to changing his name after this wave of scandal; he should adopt a more demure name like…Goodluck, he should go ask former President Jonathan, the shoeless one, who rose from being clueless to an elder statesman…how grand!
