Residents of Isawo community in Ikorodu area of Lagos State were, on Sunday, thrown into mourning after a 23-year-old lady committed suicide over alleged abuse from her elder brother.
The lady, identified as Sherifat Suleiman, was said to have killed herself after efforts to ensure her elder brother stopped his incessant molestation proved abortive in Ikorodu-West Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
It was gathered that due to the failed efforts, the lady, described as gentle by neighbours, was said to have consumed a substance believed to be an insecticide after she was beaten by her brother on Sunday. Read more

A Lagos High Court sitting at Igbosere has fixed September 24 for adoption of final written addresses in the trial of the two engineers who built the collapsed six-storey building belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Ikotun, Lagos.
Justice Lawal-Akapo fixed the date on Friday after taking submissions from counsel.
During the last sitting of the court on February 21, Justice Lawal-Akapo had ordered the defence counsel to file and adopt their final written addresses within 14 days while the prosecution, on the other hand, was asked file and adopt their written addresses within 21 days. Read more
Hairstylist bags 20 years in prison for rape (Guardian)
A 28-year-old hairstylist, Tayo Bakare, was yesterday sentenced to 20 years in prison by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for rape and kidnapping.
The convict had been accused of luring, kidnapping and raping a student on Industrial Training (IT) in one of the media houses in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Justice Abiola Soladoye had found Bakare guilty of four out of the charges of conspiracy, robbery, deprivation of liberty and rape proffered against him by the Lagos State government. Read more
Banks to place chronic loan defaulters on watch list (Punch)
The Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday released the guidelines aimed at reducing non-performing loans in the banking sector and monitoring chronic loan defaulters.
The CBN released the guidelines through a circular to all banks and other financial institutions, with the title ‘Operational guidelines on global standing instruction – Individuals.
The circular, which was signed by the Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, CBN, said, “The Bankers’ Committee, at its meeting on February 18, 2020, approved the go-live on the Global Standing Instruction, which aimed at facilitating an improved credit repayment culture; reducing non-performing loans in the Nigerian banking system; and watch-listing consistent loan defaulters.” Read more

Aminu Bayero, the Emir of Kano, on Monday re-installed Aminu Babba Dan-Agundi as a member of the Kano Emirate Council, barely 17 years after he was deposed by the reigning emir’s father, Ado Bayero.
Sarkin Dawaki Maituta was sacked from the council by the late Emir of Kano over alleged insubordination in 2003, and lost a legal battle to reclaim the stool up to the Supreme Court.
The Apex Court, in its unanimous ruling by Justice Mary Odili on June 5, 2020, held that Dan-Agundi’s removal by the late Bayero from the positions of Sarkin Dawaki Maituta and District head of Gabasawa Local Government Area was in order. Read more

In 2009, 84 children were killed by a batch of teething syrup that contained diethylene glycol, an industrial solvent and ingredient found in antifreeze and brake fluid. Two employees from the company which made the syrup were found guilty by a court.
‘Bad drugs’
The case was significant as convictions for manufacturing or selling falsified medicines remain uncommon in Nigeria.

Five days after Naya Rivera went missing while on a boating trip with her son, the Glee actress is confirmed to be dead at the age of 33. During a Monday press conference, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said that Rivera was found in Lake Piru during the ongoing recovery mission to locate her body. She was discovered on the morning of July 13. “We are confident that the body we found is that of Naya Rivera,” a sheriff explained. “She was found in the northeastern portion of the lake, near the surface of the water.” The department also confirmed that there was “no indication of foul play” and “no indication that this was a suicide.” An autopsy will be performed on Rivera’s body. Goodyear PD says officers responded to a call to assist a woman at 10:15 PM Sunday night at a Circle K. Police and say the woman flagged down a good Samaritan for help and claimed her husband, Bryshere, assaulted her for several hours at their home.
Police say Bryshere’s wife had numerous visible injuries on her body, and cops say she claimed Bryshere strangled her and she temporarily lost consciousness during the alleged assault. Read more

Hong Kong Disneyland will be closing its gates once again due to coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns.
“As required by the government and health authorities in line with prevention efforts taking place across Hong Kong, Hong Kong Disneyland Park will temporarily close from July 15, 2020,” the park announced on its website on Monday.
While Hong Kong Disneyland will be temporarily shuttered, its resort hotel “will remain open with adjusted level of services,” according to the website.
“Enhanced health and safety measures that reflect the guidance of health and government authorities have been put in place, such as social distancing measures and increased cleaning and sanitization,” the announcement read. Read more

This is because the championships, the ITTF-Africa Senior Championships, billed to hold in Cameroon in October has been postponed till 2021 with dates yet to be decided.
The postponement was occasioned by the Cornavirus pandemic that is raving the world, Africa inclusive.

Speaking at the weekend, Oshoala faulted the outright cancellation of the 2020 African Women’s Cup of Nation’s by CAF, saying it was not the right direction “to take at this critical moment when women football is struggling to grow in the continent.” She said the decision further shows that women football is not regarded as an important aspect of life in Africa.

Cameroon will not host the mini-tournament to decide the 2020 African Champions League winners, the country has announced.
Last month, after assessing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on African football, Caf said the semi-finals and final would be played in a “Final Four” format in September.
A recent spike in coronavirus cases has prompted Cameroon to turn down the chance to host the matches.
