Woman dies after falling into well (Punch)

A woman has died after falling into a 170-foot well at a construction site in Ijegun, Lagos.

 Her body was recovered by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service after a prolonged multi-agency operation.

The agency said it received a distress call around 7:34 pm on June 30, about the incident at Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop, close to Fadeko International Hotel. Read more 

Businessman docked for allegedly stealing soap worth N120m (Guardian)

A Businessman, Uchenna Nnaji of Borno Plaza, Balogun Market, Trade Fair, has been arraigned before the Criminal Division of the Lagos State High Court, presided by Justice Muyideen Abdul-Rahmen Tejumade over alleged stealing and conspiracy. He is accused of stealing Crusader soap valued at N120m.

Meanwhile, the matter was adjourned to September 24, 2025 for trial. In a Suit No: LD/23999/24, Nnaji was arraigned on a two-count. The first count is conspiracy to commit felony contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law, Cap17, Vol 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2025.

The particulars of the offence read: โ€œ Uchenna Nnaji (male) and another (still at large), sometime in 2023, around Trade Fair Complex, Lagos in the Lagos State judicial division did conspire among yourselves commit felony to wit: stealing. Read more

According to the Italian news outlet Corriere della Sera, the 35-year-old man involved in the fatal incident has been named as Italian builder Andrea Russo.

Arizona resident dies from plague, health officials say (BBC)

A resident of Arizona has died from pneumonic plague, health officials confirmed on Friday.

This was the first recorded death from the disease in the county since 2007, Coconino County Health and Human Services reported. In that case, a person had an interaction with a dead animal infected with the disease.

Plague, known as the “Black Death” in the 14th century, killed up to half of Europe’s population. It is now rare in humans and can be treated with antibiotics. Read more

Police raided the headquarters of France’s far-right National Rally party Wednesday in what officials said was an investigation into allegations of fraud, illegal loans and forged documents relating to the party’s successful elections of recent years.

It is the latest probe into whether the party has broken campaign financing laws, with its founder and de-facto leader, Marine Le Pen, having been convicted of embezzlement in April and banned from office for five years.

David Gergen, adviser to 4 presidents, dies at 83 (NPR)

David Gergen, a veteran of Washington politics and an adviser to four presidents in a career spanning decades in government, academia and media, has died. He was 83.

Gergen worked in the administrations of Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Over the years, he served as a speechwriter, communications director and counselor to the president, among other roles.

Dean Jeremy Weinstein of the Harvard Kennedy School, with which Gergen had a long relationship, said Gergen died of a long illness. Gergen “devoted decades of his life to serving those who sought to serve,” said Hannah Riley Bowles, a former co-director of the school’s Center for Public Leadership, where Gergen was the founding director.
