Woman raises alarm over disappearance of niece from Lagos apartment (Vanguard)
A distraught woman, Mrs. Abosede Adelakun, has raised the alarm over the mysterious disappearance of her 32-year-old niece, Victoria Asokere, from her apartment in Mafoluku area of Lagos, on August 13, 2023.
Adelakun explained that she left for church penultimate Sunday, before Victoria, who promised to join her later. She said she became worried when she did not see her at the close of service because she seldom misses church service.
Tension, however, set in when she got home and did not see her niece.
Adelakun said an attempt to reach Victoria on her phone failed as she discovered the phone was in the apartment. Read more
Tinubu sacks NIMC’s boss, appoints Coker-Odusote as replacement (Tribune)
President Bola Tinubu directed the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Abubakar Aziz is to commence a 90-day pre-retirement leave from August 24, 2023, leading to his eventual retirement from service on November 24, 2023.
A statement issued on Tuesday by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President(Media & Publicity), said the president also approved the appointment of Engr. Bisoye Coker-Odusote is to serve as the Acting Director-General/CEO of the NIMC for a 90-day period, with effect from August 24, 2023, after which a full term of four years will begin as the substantive NIMC Director-General/CEO, beginning on November 24, 2023.
Furthermore, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub to serve as the Director and CEO of the Directorate of Technical Aid Corps (DTAC). Read more

University of Calabar has inaugurated a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of misconduct leveled against the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Cyril Ndifon.
The panel is chaired by Prof. Dorothy Oluwagbemi-Jacob, while the Deputy Registrar, Post Graduate School, Gabriel Orok, will serve as secretary.

Lagos Assembly calls on Sanwo-Olu to convene security meeting over recent killings (Sun)
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to convene a security council meeting to find solution to the rising spate of killings in the state by the uniformed men.
The call was made on Tuesday at a plenary presided by Speaker of the House, Dr. Mudasiru Obasa. The lawmakers condemned a situation where the uniformed men have consistently been fingered in the killing of innocent residents.

The Lagos State Government has directed its commissioners and special advisers to appoint their support staff and special assistants from the state’s Public Service.
The Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, in a circular with Ref. No. CIR/HOS/’23/Vol.1/070, obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday, said appointments of personal assistants from outside the state public service were not in line with the public service structure.
He stressed that personal assistants must be internally sourced from respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies “so as not to increase the wage bill of the government.” Read more

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has charged management of the Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS), to evolve key reforms in the passport process to overcome challenges of delayed issuance and corruption as expressed by President Bola Tinubu.
The minister gave the charge during a meeting with all paramilitary chiefs under the ministry of interior, Tuesday in Abuja.

An affiliate of New Phase Full Gospel Church, NewPhase Gospel Club, has given food and toiletries to orphans in Mararaba, Nasarawa state, close to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The gifts were donated to Zion Gate Orphanage and Charity Home over the weekend. Senior Pastor of the Church, Matthew Agada, said the move was in line with the idea of God’s design and purpose for humanity, which stressed love as written in the Bible.

Mexico bus crash kills 16 and injures 36 (DW)
Fifteen Mexicans and one Venezuelan have died in a road accident in central Mexico.
On Tuesday, 52 passengers were travelling on a bus on Mexico’s Miahuatlan-Coixtlahuaca highway when it collided with a trailer in the early hours of the morning.
Out of the 52 passengers, 10 were from Venezuela and were travelling because they had appointments to seek legal entry to the United States, Mexico’s migration institute INM said. Read more
Rare giraffe born without spots at US zoo (NZHerald)
A US zoo has welcomed one of the rarest animals born in captivity: a giraffe without spots.
The female Reticulated giraffe, with a uniform brown colour, arrived at Brights Zoo in Tennessee on July 31. According to zookeepers she is the first to be born with the rare pigmentation since 1972, when Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo reported the last all-tan specimen.
In the wild, giraffes’ distinctive pattern is designed to camouflage them in the scrub of sub-Saharan Africa. The spots also contain vascular blood vessels that can allow them to regulate their temperature in the heat. Read more

NBA fines James Harden $100K over comments around 76ers (ABC)
The NBA announced Tuesday that it has fined 76ers star James Harden $100,000 after his recent comments, which indicated he “would not perform the services called for under his player contract unless traded to another team” and referred to franchise president Daryl Morey as a “liar.”
The league last week launched an inquiry into the circumstances around Harden’s comments on Aug. 14 and 17.
The investigation found that the comments stemmed from Harden’s belief that the team would not accommodate his trade request, the NBA said in a statement. An interview with Harden was part of the investigation. Read more
