A 45-year-old woman, identified as Abiodun, has set her 86-year-old mother ablaze after pouring petrol on her in Ondo City, Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Abiodun, popularly called ‘Iya Sunday’, said she set her mother ablaze because she was allegedly behind her predicament.

An eyewitness, Sola Oladele, explained that the suspect came to her mother’s house on Friday around 5 am and called out to her before pouring petrol on her and setting her on fire. Read more 

Police investigate death of lovers found naked in Ondo town (Tribune)

Police from Ondo State Command said it had commenced investigation to unravel the cause of the death of two lifeless bodies of lovers in a house located at Ayeyemi area of  Ondo town, Ondo State on Thursday.

It was discovered that the lifeless middle-aged man identified as Eric and his unidentified girlfriend were reportedly found stuck together in the room.

The source said it took the help of a medical doctor to separate the remains of the two secret lovers but they were confirmed dead. Read more

160,000 kids living with HIV in Nigeria’ (Vanguard)

The Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) has urged the government and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS among children in the country.

According to the CCN, Nigeria has an estimated 160,000 children living with HIV, with only 45,000 receiving treatment.

The council made the call at the close-out ceremony of the HIV intervention programme implemented in collaboration with the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Abuja over the weekend. Read more

Eid-el-Kabir: Police promises 24-hour patrol of Lagos-Ibadan expressway, others (Punch)

The Ogun State Police Command, on Sunday, promised to increase its presence in some flashpoints across the state to ensure that the security of the residents is never threatened during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The command also promised to provide 24-hour patrol of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Kara Long Bridge and Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway.

Troops conducting clearance patrols have neutralised three bandits along Gonna Rogo-Eka axis of Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

This was coming barely 48 after troops of Sector 4 Operation Whirl Punch and 198 Special Forces Battalion conducted special operations and killed six bandits in Birnin Gwari LGA.

The Ijaw ethnic nationality in Rivers State has announced its plan to commence the reconcilation move between Governor of the State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, to bring to rest the political crisis in the state.

This was as they stated that Wike, former Governor of the state is not an enemy of the Ijaw nation, noting that the Minister is working closely with Ijaw leaders.

Israel uses UNRWA building as sniper post, report says (UPI)

Israel has allegedly raided a building owned by the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the West Bank and used it as a sniper post.

The official state-run Palestinian News Agency, known as WAFA, reported that Israeli forces detained a Palestinian person and injured a minor with shrapnel in the Far’a refugee camp, northeast of the occupied West Bank city of Nablus, during the operation.

The arrest comes as nearly 9,300 Palestinian prisoners have been arrested and are currently held in Israeli prisons and detention centers, according to the Palestine Prisoner’s Society. Around 250 prisoners are children. Read more

Pilgrims performed on Sunday the last major ritual of the Hajj, the “stoning of the devil,” in western Saudi Arabia, as Muslims the world over celebrated the Eid Al Adha holiday.

Beginning at dawn, the 1.8 million Muslims undertaking the pilgrimage this year threw seven stones at each of three concrete walls symbolising the devil in the Mina valley, located outside the Holy City of Makkah, the holiest city in Islam.

The ritual commemorates Hazrat Ibraham’s (PBUH) stoning of the devil at the three spots where it is said Satan tried to dissuade him from obeying God’s order to sacrifice his son. Read more

The German police have fired shots at a person who allegedly threatened officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device on the sidelines of a Euro 2024 football fan parade in central Hamburg, according to a police post on social media platform X.

A major police operation was under way and the suspect was receiving medical care for injuries, the post on Sunday added.
