Ganduje orders probe into claims Gorilla swallowed N6.8m (Guardian)
Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano has ordered the state Anti-Corruption Commission to probe the claims by the Kano Zoological Gardens that a Gorilla in the state-owned Zoo swallowed N6.8 million. “The order was given on Friday and the commission has already swung into action,” a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Abba Anwar, said on Sunday in Kano. It quoted the governor as directing the commission to look into the immediate and remote circumstances surrounding the allegation and “unearth everything surrounding the incident”. Read more
Guard your certificates, we’ll not issue twice —WAEC (Punch)
The West African Examinations Council on Sunday advised people in possession of its certificates to guard them well, saying it will not re-issue on account of misplacement, fire, flood or theft. The council’s Head of National Office, Mr Olu Adenipekun, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos State. Adenipekun said the advice was necessary as lots of people have been approaching the council at various times for a re-issue of the lost certificates. Read more
Panic over gunshots in Maiduguri (Punch)
Residents in the outskirts of Maiduguri on Sunday witnessed some skirmishes following indiscriminate shooting by some soldiers. The situation forced many women, children and elderly people in Damboa road and Polo general area to scamper for safety. Nigeria must learn from Rwandan genocide, says Gambari (Guardian)
To save the country from going the way of Rwanda in 1990s, Nigerians must deliberately avoid hate speech, Ibrahim Gambari, a professor of Political Science and International Relations told The Guardian in a recent email exchange. Professor Gambari described hate speech as slippery slope to conflicts and wars within countries and should, therefore, be punished promptly by governments. His comments came in response to The Guardian’s enquiry as Rwanda marked the 25th year of a genocide caused by hate-mongering that led up to tribal killings and death of millions in 1994. Read more

The Special Adviser to the President on Social Investments, Mrs Maryam Uwais, has explained why the Homegrown School Feeding Programme of the Federal Government was suspended in some states. There had been reports of poor quality food, insufficient and irregular supply of food, as well as late disbursement of funds by the government in states, such as Akwa Ibom and Niger. Protest compels examinations postponement in EKSU (Guardian)
A protest by students of Ekiti State University, (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, has forced management to postpone the first semester examinations which were originally scheduled to begin on Monday, June 17. In a news release issued on Sunday night and signed by the Registrar of the institution, Mr Akin Arogundade, the new date for the examinations is now Monday, July 1. The postponement according to the statement is to ensure security of lives and property on campus and its environs. Read more
Hoodlums stab photographer to death, injure fisherman in Lagos (Punch)
The family of a photographer, Tode Julius, has been thrown into mourning after he was stabbed to death by hoodlums while on his way to buy food in the Ayetoro area of Ebute Meta in the Yaba Local Council Development Area of Lagos State. Mine blast kills four police in Cameroon (Punch)
A mine blast killed four police officers travelling in a troubled anglophone region of Cameroon in the southwest of the country, the government said Sunday. The blast happened on Saturday morning between Eyumojock and Otu, in Manyu, one of Cameroon’s two anglophone regions, said a statement from Communications Minister Rene Emmanuel Sadi. As well as the four officers killed, another six were injured, the statement added. Read more

Man, 42, rushed to hospital after being attacked with ‘acid’ in public toilet (Metro)
A man has been rushed to hospital after being attacked by two men with an ‘unknown liquid’ in a public toilet. The victim, 42, said he felt a ‘burning sensation’ from the substance and fled to a nearby post office for help. It was thrown from a clear plastic bottle and the suspects are described as two black men in dark clothing. Read more

FIFA said Sunday they were exploring legal options after revealing unauthorised transmissions of the ongoing Women’s World Cup in France were made in Saudi Arabia by pirate broadcaster, beoutQ. The world governing body also called for satellite operator Arabsat’s cooperation in the face of the “intellectual property” infringement. This is not the first time that FIFA has pointed the finger at beoutQ, a channel which has often been accused of fanning the flames of political tensions between bitter regional rivals Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Gianfranco Zola is set to leave Chelsea this summer following the departure of manager Maruizio Sarri. Sarri has given up his role at Stamford Bridge after just one year in order to take up the position at Juventus after Massimiliano Allegri resigned at the end of last season. Didier Drogba is not willing to let Arsenal forget that Chelsea lifted the Europa League final in Baku this year, not the Gunners. Arsenal have reached an agreement with William Saliba over a transfer to the Emirates, but must now agree a fee with Saint-Etienne, according to reports in France. The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the 18-year-old defender in recent weeks, as have Manchester United and Manchester City.
