3 die, others injured as Lagos transport unions clash (Sun)
Three persons died while many others were injured during a battle of supremacy between members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at Mile 2, Lagos.
The three dead persons were members of RTEAN, while the injured persons are from both sides. The dead were shot on Wednesday night by armed men suspected to be members of the NURTW.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has summoned the warring unions to an emergency meeting tomorrow.
The armed NURTW members were said to have invaded the RTEAN park at about 9.15pm, in an ongoing violent clash over toll collection from truck drivers, into the Apapa ports. Read more
Campus security: UNILAG gets 1,000 CCTV cameras (Vanguard)
A technology company, Bionomics Nig. Ltd., on Thursday donated 1,000 Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as part of its contributions to improved security.
The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the university on the project on Thursday in Lagos.
Its Managing Director, Mr Ugochukwu Onyedika, said at the event that there was the need to step up efforts in tackling security challenges in the country through deployment of technologies.
Onyedika said that the objective of the project was to further strengthen the security architecture of UNILAG. Read more
LCCI unveils dates, arrangements for 2021 Lagos International Trade Fair (Independent)
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), has stated that the 2021 Lagos International Trade Fair (LITF) will hold from Friday, November 5, 2021 to Sunday November 14, 2021 at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
Mr. Gabriel Idahosa, Vice President and Chairman, Trade Promotion Board, who made the disclosure at a press conference in Lagos, said: “over 200,000 visitors would be expected at the 10 days trade fair with exhibition space of about 28,000 sqm square metres, while the number of exhibitors expected would be over 1500 from 16 countries”.
According to Idahosa, “companies and organisations partnering with LCCI towards the successful exhibition of the fair cut across Bank of Industry (BoI) which is a Gold Partner of the expected event, TGI Distri which bring its support to bear as Health and Safety Partner, FEDAN Investment Limited which is the Electrical Accessories Partner of the Fair while Lifemate Furniture continues to be its Partner”. Omo-Agege: N’Assembly will pass 2022 Budget before December 16 (ThisDay)
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has declared that the National Assembly will pass the 2022 Appropriation Bill presented to it last Thursday by President Muhammadu Buhari before December 16, this year. Omo-Agege, who spoke Thursday while playing host to his former classmates at the Nigerian Law School Class of 1986 (The Centennial Class) in Abuja, assured Nigerians that the National Assembly is determined to pass the 2022 budget before the year runs out. According to him, “The budget process is ongoing. In the next 30 days, we will conclude it and pass it before we go on Christmas break, sometime on December 16.”He stressed that early approval and signing of the appropriation bill into law will ensure planning, bring about enhanced productivity and efficiency in the management and application of the nation’s resources.Read more
Infrastructure: Reps make case for Calabar- Lagos coastal line in 2022 Budget (Independent)
Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday advanced arguments regarding the importance of prioritising rail infrastructure, with special attention on the Lagos-Calabar coastal line in the 2022 Appropriation Bill.
Leading the debate on the general principles of the bill with particular reference to this project was the Chairman House Services Committee, Hon. Tasir Olawale Raji, rep-resenting Epe Federal Con-stituency of Lagos State.
Raji, in his argument, com-menced the President for vot-ing money for rail infrastruc-ture in the new budget, just as he hailed the leadership of the House for remaining steadfast in its resolve to sus-tain the January – December budget calendar. Read more
250 bandits neutralised, 1,800 surrender weapons -Defence Chief (Sun)
Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, has disclosed that 250 bandits have, so far, been neutralised in the quest to address the problem of insecurity in the North West zone of the country.
He made the disclosure, yesterday, at the weekly ministerial briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team.
He said: “The primary objective of the government is to ensure the peace and wellbeing of every citizen; so, we undertake our operations and activities to ensure there is peace, development and the provision of amenities that aggregate to governance.
“We are responsible for the security content in that regard, so, to that extent, looking at the numbers, from the last report that I got on Monday, we have neutralised over 250 of the bandits. We have equally arrested well over 600, and because it is a continuous thing, the figures might also change. Read more
Enugu father hacks 32-year-old son to death for threatening to kill him (Punch)
A 60-year-old father, Ikechukwu, has allegedly killed his son in Ogbozinne-Ndiagu Akpugo community, in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The father of four reportedly killed his son on Thursday on the claim that the 32-year-old allegedly threatened to kill him over issues yet to be ascertained.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Ikechukwu and his son were at home when an argument ensued between them.
When the argument became intense, the father reportedly placed a distress call to the chairman of Ogbozinne village, claiming that his son threatened to kill him. Read more
Rains of tributes for Ndubuisi Kanu in Southeast (Nation)
Eminent Southeast personalities yesterday paid glowing tributes to former Military Administrator (MILAD) of Imo and Lagos states, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu.
The occasion was a “Day of Tributes and Commendation Service” in honour of the late naval officer and pro-democracy leader.
The Abia State government organised the event, which held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, the state capital, to enable Nigerians pay their last respects to the deceased. Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who set the tone for the event, said the best way to immortalise the departed statesman was to continue to fight for the ideals he stood for.
Other eminent Nigerians, mostly from the Southeast, lined up to pay tributes to one of their own and a man widely regarded as a symbol of unity and rallying point for pro-democracy struggle. Read more
Gully erosion takes toll on UNIBEN, communities (Vanguard)
Some staff and students residing close to the Ugbowo Campus of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and residents in Iguo-Osaigie and other surrounding communities in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo are about to be cut off because of the ravaging gully erosion in the area.
The surrounding communities, Iguo-Hana, Iguo-Efosa, Oke-Okehn, Okun Magiajemen and Utteh have called on the relevant authorities to come to their rescue.
The residents said the erosion had already cut off the alternative route and the bridge linking Ugbowo and Ikpoba River.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some other areas affected by the gully erosion included the portion housing the UNIBEN Senior Staff Club and senior staff quarters. Read more
Bill Clinton: Former US president in hospital for ‘non-Covid infection’ (BBC)
Former US President Bill Clinton has been receiving hospital treatment in California for a “non-Covid-related infection”, a spokesman says.
Mr Clinton, 75, is “on the mend” and “in good spirits” after being admitted to UC Irvine Medical Center on Tuesday, spokesman Angel Ureña said.
Though it is unclear what led to the admission, Mr Clinton has a history of heart disease.
A statement from his doctors said he had received antibiotics and fluids. Read more
Lethal robot dogs now have assault rifles attached to their backs (Metro)
Like something out of a terrifying sci-fi movie, weapons companies have started attaching rifles to the back of semi-autonomous robot dogs.
The Black Mirror-esque creations were shown off in the USA, at an Army convention in Washington DC.
Known as a Quadrupedal Unmanned Ground Vehicles (or Q-UGV for short) the dog is made by Philadelphia-based Ghost Robotics.
‘They have a place in a broad range of government and enterprise applications where mobile robots with four legs have inherent advantages over wheels, tracks and even bipedal systems,’ the company says. Read more

Covid tests for travellers will be cheaper from October 24 (Metro)
People going on holiday during the pandemic have had more than the usual costs of the hotel and flights to take into account.
The price of PCR coronavirus tests have been prohibitive too, with the cheapest available starting around £40 but some more than £100 per person.
Now, the government has given more details of how the process for returning to England will be made simpler.
Everyone returning from abroad will still have to take a Covid test on or by their second day back in the country.
But fully vaccinated people arriving from countries not on the red list will be able to take a cheaper and quicker lateral flow test rather than the PCR version from October 24. Read more

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters is married for the fifth time at 78 — to a beautiful 43-year-old woman whom he met as his driver.
Waters announced on Instagram he has married Kamilah Chavis, who he has been dating for around five years, posting a series of photos of the happy couple celebrating their wedding in The Hamptons, where he owns a mansion.
And in a not-so-slightly veiled dig at his former wives, Waters wrote on Instagram, “I’m so happy, finally a keeper.”
Waters, who is said to be worth $310 million, told Argentine media outlet Infobae in 2018 how he met Chavis. Read more
Banksy’s Love is in the Bin sells for record £16m (BBC)
A Banksy artwork which shredded itself at a previous auction has sold for a record £16m.
Love is in the Bin was what remained of the artist’s live destruction of his piece Girl with Balloon, which sold for £1m in 2018.
It went under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on Thursday, selling for £16m – vastly over its £4-6m guide price.
Including a buyer’s premium, the purchaser paid £18.5m in total. Read more

Tommy Lee Jones is set to replace Harrison Ford in Amazon’s upcoming movie The Burial after the actor had to drop out.
According to Deadline’s report, Tommy will now star alongside Jamie Foxx in the lead role which was going to be filled by Harrison, with Maggie Betts set to direct.
The Burial screenplay has been written by Doug Wright, with Amazon Studios, Bobby Shriver Inc. and Double Nickel Entertainment producing the upcoming drama based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr with Jamie.
The Burial is based on the true story of a bankrupt funeral home owner who hires a flamboyant attorney to sue a rival businessman over a handshake deal gone wrong. Read more
Ahmadu-Kida must go’ protest holds in Abuja ahead NBBF elections (Punch)
Hundreds of placard-carrying protesters, who claimed to be basketball players and wearing shirts with the inscription ‘Kida must go’, protested in Abuja on Thursday against the re-election of Musa Ahmadu-Kida as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation.
The protestors marched from Area 10 Old Parade, Garki to Unity Fountain, Maitama, demanding that Ahmadu-Kida did not impose himself on the federation for another term.
The outgoing board had been under scathing criticisms from D’Tigress players, who won the 2021 Women’s AfroBasket in Cameroon.
The players, in a video which went viral, demanded that they be paid their financial entitlements from their participation in the 2017 AfroBasket, as well as presidential recognition.
They also threatened to boycott the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Australia if their demands were not met. Read more

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling says he would be open to playing abroad if he does not get more game time at Etihad Stadium.

The forward was part of the Belgium side that lost to France on Thursday, netting shortly before half-time as Roberto Martinez’s side threw away a two-goal advantage against the world champions.

Agnes Tirop: Husband arrested in Kenya after athlete’s death (BBC)
Police in Kenya have arrested the husband of record-breaking long-distance runner Agnes Tirop who was stabbed to death at her home.
Emmanuel Rotich, who was detained in the coastal city of Mombasa, will face charges once investigations are completed, an official said.
Ms Tirop, 25, was found dead on Wednesday in the western town of Iten, a training centre for top athletes.
She had finished fourth in this year’s Tokyo Olympic 5,000m final. Read more
