40-year-old man strangles lady, sleeps with corpse in Lagos (Guardian)
The police have arrested a 40-year-old man, Adetomiwa Adeyinka, at Ahmadiyya Ijaiye, Ojokoro area of Lagos, for allegedly strangling his girlfriend who visited him in his house and sleeping with her corpse.
Adeyinka, on September 12, went to the police, and lied that the lady, 36-year-old Chinonso Okomadu, who he referred to as his girlfriend, had visited him from Ikotun and took ill, and was rushed to a private hospital, where the doctor confirmed her dead.
But on interrogation, he confessed to have strangled the lady and slept with her. Read more
Lagos downpour collapses building with 500 rooms (Vanguard)
A building comprising over 500 rooms has collapsed in the Ketu area of Lagos. The cause was attributed to Saturday’s heavy downpour. The injured persons were said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Also, one person was hospitalised while others escaped with minor injuries, yesterday when four and other two-storey buildings situated beside each other partially collapsed at number 47/49 Oduntan Street, Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The incident happened in the afternoon apparently, due to the impact of the Saturday downpour, which could have weakened the structure. Read more
Marketers eye fresh fuel price hike as crude hits $94 (Punch)
The rise in the cost of crude oil, coupled with the depreciation of the naira against the United States dollar, might lead to a hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, oil marketers stated on Sunday.
It was also gathered that the sharp rise in crude oil price to about $94/barrel and the crisis around forex, had warranted a gradual increase in the amount being quietly spent as subsidy on petrol by the Federal Government.
Dealers in the downstream oil sector explained that the cost of crude oil and the exchange rate of the dollar accounted for over 80 per cent of the cost of PMS. Read more

Minister of Works, Engineer Dave Umahi, has said the current administration inherited at least N14 trillion worth of 2,604 road projects covering 18,000 kilometers from the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.
He stated this at the weekend after his first briefing session with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“The ministry inherited a total of 2,604 projects, worth N14tn and for 18,000 kilometers of road, that’s what we had,” he said. Read more

The Lagos State Government over the weekend joined the Global community in commemorating 2023 World Clean-Up Day, urging every resident to imbibe and sustain the culture of consistent clean up of the environment.

Averted Crash: Adeleke’s aide alleges sabotage (NewTelegraph)
The spokesperson for the Osun State Governor, Olawale Rasheed, yesterday, confirmed that a crash of an aircraft conveying the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, and some of his aides, was narrowly averted while adding that two of the aircraft’s engines might have been tampered with.
It was reported in a national daily that an aircraft carrying Adeleke and some of his aides nearly crashed on September 5, while attempting to take off from Lagos for a journey to Abuja, and Rasheed in a statement yesterday, confirmed the story, adding that early reports from internal investigation indicated sabotage.
Rasheed also said the aircraft was well-maintained with the best technical crew and was never an unused platform where birds could build nests. The statement further read: “Contrary to the claim by the hanger owner that birds’ nests caused the incident, birds’ nests are made with straws not bidding wires as in this case. Read more
Ondo Commissioner attacked, hospitalised over palliatives distribution (Channels)
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Ondo State, Dr. Olubunmi Osadahun, was at the weekend, attacked in Arigidi Akoko, Akoko North West Local Government Area of the state.
Osadahun was said to have been hit with a chair on the head during the distribution of foodstuffs as palliatives aimed at supporting the vulnerable due to inflation caused by the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Jann Wenner, who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine and was also a co-founder of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, has been removed from the hall’s board of directors after making comments seen as disparaging toward black and female musicians.
“Jann Wenner has been removed from the Board of Directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation,” the hall said on Saturday, a day after Mr Wenner’s comments were published in a New York Times interview.
A representative for Mr Wenner, 77, did not immediately respond for a comment. Read more
EU chief von der Leyen to visit Italy amid migrant influx (DW)
European Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Italy’s Lampedusa island on Sunday alongside Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, amid calls from Italy’s right-wing government upon the European Union to help with the influx of migrants.
Meloni invited von der Leyen to visit after some 8,500 people arrived on the island by boat in merely three days. The Italian prime minister wanted the EU chief to be aware of the “seriousness of the situation” facing Italy, with one day alone witnessing the arrival of 5,000 migrants.
“President von der Leyen will be traveling to Lampedusa tomorrow on the invitation of Italian PM Meloni,” European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer posted online Saturday. Read more

An instantly recognisable office tower in the heart of Sudan’s capital is engulfed in flames as fighting between the army and a rival paramilitary group enters its sixth month.
The Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company (GNPOC) Tower, situated in downtown Khartoum, caught fire early on Sunday during clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to Sudanese media.
It is unclear how the fire started or whether anyone was killed. Read more
Brazil: 14 killed after plane crashes in Amazon (BBC)
Fourteen people have been killed in a plane crash during bad weather in the Brazilian Amazon on Saturday.
The small propeller plane was nearing the end of its 400km (248 mile) trip between Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, and the remote jungle town of Barcelos when it went down.
Officials said all those on board – 12 passengers and two crew – were killed in the crash.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the incident. Read more
