Ambode, Utomi seek productivity to boost govt image (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has advocated transparency and accountability in the accounting profession, adding that professionals must see themselves as strategic partners of the government in the attainment of its smart city vision. The Lagos State Head of Service, Folashade Adesoye, who was represented by the state Accountant-General, Abimbola Umar, at the 8th Annual Public Lecture of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Lagos State Public Service chapter, urged accountants in the employ of the state government to upgrade their skills and knowledge of project management to enable them to key into the direction of government in its infrastructural renewal drive. 2019: Lagos APC unveils leadership programme for youths (Nation)
As the nation prepares for the 2019 general elections, the youth wing of the Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled a leadership conference to change the mindset of the youths to politics and governance. APC Youth Leader in the State, Mr Omotayo Sanyaolu, in a statement yesterday, said the leadership conference was part of activities lined up to celebrate the International Youth Day slated for August 12, 2018. He said the conference, with the theme, “Youths As Catalyst In National Development,” will take place on August 12, 2018 at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja by 11am prompt, adding that the principal objective of the programme was to equip youths with basic leadership skills as the country is set for a crucial electioneering process in 2019. Lagos communities embark on no prepaid meter, no payment campaign (Guardian)
Residents of Isheri-Oshun in Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in what they termed ‘disconnecting darkness’ have decried the outrageous billings by the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) and intensified the clamour for prepaid meters as the only way out of their dilemma. Already, 15 Community Development Associations (CDAs) in a joint coalition have also agreed to reject the services of the electricity distribution company with a ‘No Meter, No Payment’ campaign starting from September 1, if their demands are not met. The CDAs include Viable, Kosobameji, Isale-Ijon, Odo-Atoro, Oke-Isheri, Anu-Olohun, Palm city, Ajaye, Iseki-Ijon, God’s own, Harmony, Wazobia, Fagbile Phase 3, Irepodun and Osun Isheri. Read more
Apapa Gridlock: Lagos flags off expansion of ABAT Truck Terminal (Independent)
In a bid to find urgent solution to the gridlock and congestion in Apapa area of Lagos State, which has gradually entered into the city, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday flagged off the expansion of the ABAT Truck Terminal in Orile Iganmu. The Governor assured that work would be accelerated on the 1000-capacity terminal to take trucks parked indiscriminately on the roads and bridges. He said the expansion of the Terminal was one of the resolutions reached at the recent meeting with stakeholders, especially in the Maritime sector on finding lasting solutions to take containerised trucks permanently off the roads, a development that is majorly responsible for the gridlock in the Apapa area. Lagos State government has charged accountants in the state to upgrade their skills and knowledge of project management as strategic partners to join in the realisation of a ‘Smart City’ vision of the state. Folashade Adesoye, head of service, stated this yesterday, at the eighth annual public lecture of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Lagos State Public Service Chapter (LSPSC), in Lagos, themed: Infrastructural Renewal and Quest For A Functional Smart Lagos. According to Adesoye, the accountants’ quality and contributions in the area of the ‘smart Lagos’ initiative will go a long way to portray them and the professional body they represent as strategic partners of the state’s development and growth. Onne youth protest alleged planned relocation of Shell base to Lagos (PremiumTimes)
Amid denials by Shell Nigeria Exploration & Production Company (SNEPCo), Onne Youth Council (OYC) on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest to the company urging it to ‘rescind’ its alleged plan to relocate its supply base from Onne to Lagos. Last Thursday, supposed workers of the company in a statement circulated to the media said the plan to relocate from the Oil & Gas Export Free Zone in Onne, Rivers State to Lagos Port violated the federal government’s directive to oil companies against relocating their operational bases from the Niger Delta region. Lagos Lawyer urges INEC to Prosecute Fayose, Others (ThisDay)
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been asked to prosecute the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, his Deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola and the acting Chairman of Ekiti State Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. Lere Olayinka for alleged violation of the Electoral Act, 2010 during the July 14 governorship election. This is coming as the Election Petition Tribunal Sitting in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital yesterday granted the Governor-elect and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the July 14 governorship election in the state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi access to materials used for the conduct of the election. Lagos-Badagry Expressway a Deathtrap — NURTW (Independent)
Motorists, passengers and road transport union have expressed dissatisfaction over the state of the Lagos-Badagry International Expressway, describing it as a deathtrap. Mr Oloyede Edun, the Vice-Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), said many lives had been lost to accidents because of the road which had been under construction for about 30 years. He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry on Tuesday that armed robbers have now taken advantage of the pothole-ridden road to attack innocent motorists and passengers, dispossessing them of their valuables. Family planning is changing fortunes for many housewives in Lagos, according to findings on this year’s World Population Day, WPD – July 11 – with the theme: Family Planning is a Right, some married women told Good Health Weekly that their expectations on contraceptive use are being met. A number of women encountered said they are having their children by choice and not by chance as a result. During site visits to mark the WPD, organised by Pathfinder International in collaboration with the Family Planning Media Advocacy Working Group, some of the housewives said their greatest motivation was the need for a happy home. 72-year-old widow laments electrical charges for non-existing meter (Punch)
A 72-year-old widow, Mrs Ibidun Balogun, has lamented alleged electrical bills for a meter that was taken from her 13 years ago. The Lagos State indigene, who resides at 3, Ogunleye Street, Oke-Otana, Ikorodu, said she was allegedly billed N700,000 by the Ikeja Electric for the period. The septuagenarian said since the meter was taken away, she had been receiving electrical charges for it despite having a prepaid meter in her house. Balogun also said her tenant had been complaining about the “crazy bills” they got from Ikeja Electric and called on the government to intervene. Read more
Police arrest 150 suspected cultists, kidnappers in Lagos (PremiumTimes)
The Police in Lagos said on Tuesday that they arrested 150 suspected cultists and kidnappers in the last one year in the Epe community. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Epe, Adeyeri Sunday, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview at Epe. Mr Sunday, a chief superintendent of police, said the arrests were made between July 2017 and July 2018. He said the arrests were made in several locations in the locality, such as Okemagba area, Ita-opo, Poka, Temu, Papa, Noforija, T-Junction, Aiyetoro and Lagos road, to mention but a few. “These arrests were made in the suburbs of Epe and also within the town. “Most of the suspects were either members of the `Eiye’, `Aye’ and the `Buccaneers’ confraternities. Lagos trader running from scorpion falls into 100-foot well (Punch)
Tragedy struck in Alaja community, Megida, in the Ayobo area of Lagos State, after a 40-year-old petty trader, Ablavi Hunkpati, fell into an abandoned well and died. Punch Metro learnt that the mother of four was running from a scorpion when she slipped and fell into the well said to be about 100 feet deep. Our correspondent learnt that after failed attempts by residents, relatives and sympathisers to rescue her, officials of the Lagos State Fire Service were called to the scene. Read more
Man drops dead at Bus Stop in Lagos (Independent)
The body of a middle-aged man, who reportedly slumped and died, was found at Orile Iganmu bus stop in Lagos on Tuesday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered at the scene that the deceased was a passerby who suddenly slumped and died after he took ill in the early hours of Tuesday. Mr. Yinus Olayiwola, a trader close to the scene, said that the deceased was seen shivering on the spot at about 6:30 a.m. The deceased’s situation was worsened by an early morning drizzle, he said. Team Nigeria’s performance at African Athletics Championships thrills Zenith Bank (Guardian)
The Management of Zenith Bank Plc has commended the Team Nigeria athletes that took part in the just concluded Senior African Athletics Championship in Asaba, Delta State for putting up encouraging performance to finish third at the competition. Nigeria won nine gold, six silver and five bronze medals to finish behind overall winners Kenya, which had 11 gold, six silver and two bronze medals and second-placed South Africa, which got nine gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medals. Aminu declares NFF illegal, canvasses enabling laws to halt perennial crisis (Guardian)
Former Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Col. Abdulmumini Aminu (rtd.) yesterday said the current Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was being run ‘illegally’ and that there was need for an enabling law for effective football administration in the country. Aminu, who has been saddled with the responsibility reconciling the NFF warring factions within two weeks as the head of Elder Stakeholders Reconciliation Committee appointed by the sports ministry, says the leadership tussle between Amaju Pinnick and Chris Giwa has dragged for too long because of lack of laws for the federation.
