Boko Haram: Senate asks military to deploy troops to Borno, Yobe (Channels)

The Senate on Tuesday asked the military to urgently redeploy personnel and advanced equipment to Borno and Yobe states, following a resurgence of attacks by Boko Haram terrorists in the areas. 

The resolution followed renewed insurgent attacks in the North-East region, including the killing of over a dozen soldiers in Marte town of the Monguno Local Government Area on Monday, May 12, and a subsequent assault early Tuesday on Gajiram, the headquarters of the Nganzai Local Government Area.

In a motion raised by the Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Munguno, lawmakers noted that while two-thirds of the local government areas in Borno were once under Boko Haram control, collaborative efforts between the Nigerian military and civilian joint task force had successfully reclaimed the territories. Nigerians demand Tompolo, Okoya’s sons face trial as court jails artist, creator for spraying naira (Guardian)

Nigerians are mounting pressure on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prosecute former Niger Delta militant, Government Tompolo and the sons of wealthy businessman, Okoya for abusing the naira.

These demands come a day after the Federal High Court in Ikoyi has sentenced Nigerian artiste, Babatunde Peter Olaitan, known as Tee Dollar, and a content creator, Tobilola Olamide, aka Tobi Nation, to six months in prison for naira abuse.

Tee Dollar and Tobi Nation were arraigned for spraying N200 denominations of naira notes at a party and tampering the currency. Read more 

Natasha appears in court to challenge suspension from Senate (NewTelegraph)

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Tuesday appeared before a Federal High Court in Abuja for the hearing of a suit challenging her suspension by the Senate over allegations of misconduct by one of the parties in the suit

Akpoti-Uduaghan had, in her motion, joined the National Assembly, the Senate, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Neda Imasuem, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, as defendants.

When the suit which was reassigned to Justice Binta Nyako, following the withdrawal of Justice Obiorah Egwuatu, from the matter, was called on Monday, counsel to the suspended Senator, Jibrin Okutekpa (SAN), told the court that the plaintiff has filed all the documents to be relied on in the matter, in line with the directive of the court at the last hearing. Police rearrest escaped suspected kidnapper of Anambra lawmaker (Punch)

The Anambra State Police Command has rearrested one Ikemefuna Ossai, a suspect linked to the kidnapping and gruesome murder of the late member, representing Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Justice Azuka.

It was gathered that the suspect was re-arrested in Asaba, Delta State, by a team of Police operatives led by the former Officer-in-Charge of Anambra Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ifeanyi Iburu, a Chief Superintendent of Police.

Ossai was first arrested on February 6, the day the lifeless body of the kidnapped lawmaker, who was abducted on December 24, 2024, was found by security operatives near the Second Niger Bridge. Read more

Gérard Depardieu found guilty in sexual assault trial (BBC)

French film star Gérard Depardieu has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two women on a film set at a trial in Paris and given a suspended jail term of 18 months.

The 76-year-old actor was accused by the two women of groping them during work on a film in 2021. Depardieu had denied the allegations against him and his lawyer said he would appeal.

The court in Paris found that one of the women, a set dresser named Amélie, had given consistent evidence while the actor’s accounts had changed over time. Read more

A woman in England is speaking out after her husband confessed to drugging her and raping her for years, according to a report.

A victim who was identified by the BBC under the pseudonym “Kate,” recalled how her former partner would spike her tea at night with sleeping medication, before sexually abusing her as she slept.

Kate told her story on the BBC’s File on 4 Investigates journalism documentary series. The case is similar to that of French woman Gisèle Pelicot, whose ex-husband Dominique Pelicot was found guilty in December in a mass rape trial that horrified the world. Read more

Journalist among 2 killed in Israeli attack on Gaza hospital (AlJazeera)

Israel’s army has admitted to carrying out “a targeted attack” on the Nasser Medical Complex in the city of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killing two people, including Palestinian journalist Hassan Eslaih.

Gaza’s Government Media Office on Tuesday confirmed the killing of Eslaih, who was receiving treatment at the hospital’s burn unit for severe injuries sustained during an April 7 Israeli strike on a media tent located next to the hospital.

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has had “urgent” surgery on a serious abdominal injury sustained in last Sunday’s Premier League match with Leicester.
