Couple in court for rape, assault of 19-year-old house girl (Punch)

An Ogudu Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Tuesday, remanded a couple, Omolara Alashe, 36 and her husband, Ramoni Lateef, 40, for allegedly assaulting and raping their 19-year-old housekeeper.

The couple, who reside in Igbonla, Ketu, Lagos State, are facing trial for alleged rape, assault, stealing and sexual assault.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Tanimola, who did not take the plea of the defendants, ordered their remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending receipt of advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions. Read more

Teacher in court for beating 9-year-old pupil (Punch)

A 35-year-old woman, Aderonke Makinde, was on Tuesday arraigned at the Ogba Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Ikeja area of Lagos State for allegedly flogging a nine-year-old girl, Oyinkansola Kayode, with a cane at her school, Westgate Land Emperial Creche, Nursery and Primary School in the Mushin area of Lagos State.

Makinde, who was arraigned before Magistrate E. Kubenje, is facing one count of assault.

The police prosecutor, Ajayi Kehinde, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 28, 2023. Read more

Lagos bishop raped me twice –Female pastor (Punch)

A 23-year-old student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko in Akure Ondo State, (names withheld) on Tuesday, narrated to an Ikeja Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court how she was allegedly raped by the founder of her church, Oluwafeyiropo Daniels, of I Reign Christian Family Church.

The witness, who is a former assistant pastor of the church’s branch in Akungba, told the court presided over by Justice Ramon Oshodi that her first encounter with the bishop was on May 28, 2018, when he visited Akure for a programme.

The rape victim, who was led in examination-in-chief by the Lagos State prosecution counsel, Babajide Boye, testified that subsequently, she became a member of the church and when her pastor, Toyosi Bamishe, needed to hand over to Pastor Boluwatife Oladejo, she was made the assistant pastor. Surety supplies fake address to secure suspect’s bail (Punch)

A surety, Hussaini Yahaya, has been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State for presenting a fake residential address in a bid to secure bail for a defendant, Ayuba Ali, remanded for theft in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

Yahaya was arraigned by the state police command before Magistrate O. Y Adefope on Monday, on two counts of an attempt to pervert justice and cause a breach of peace.

According to the prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, Ali was remanded for stealing on May 4, 2023, and Yahaya signed as surety for his bail, claiming to be a relative, which is false, and also provided a fake residential address of No 9, Oseni Olawale Street, Ikorodu. Read more

Commercial motorcyclist injured as robbers invade Lagos community (Punch)

Suspected armed robbers who specialise in stealing motorcycles were said to have invaded a community in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, leaving behind tales of woes.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the armed men invaded Vincent Street in the area around 3am last Wednesday, shattering the peace being experienced in the area.

Some residents of the area told our correspondent that the armed men were conveyed to the area in a Sienna car, one minibus and one tricycle. Read more

3 suspected Lagos cultists remanded (Punch)

The Yaba Magistrates’ court on Monday remanded three suspected cultists for alleged murder, robbery and unlawful possession of arms.

They were accused of killing one Victor Isa.

The defendants, Balogun Ahmed, Kareem Sanni, and Shina Bankole were arraigned before Magistrate L. Y. Balogun on six counts of illegal possession of a shotgun, theft, murder and belonging to an unlawful group known as the Eiye confraternity preferred against them by the Lagos State Police Command. NIS stops suspect from trafficking 2 underage girls (Punch)

The Nigeria Immigration Service has arrested a suspected human trafficker who was planning to take two underage girls out of the country.

The arrest was made at the service’s Alimosho Passport Front Office in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the female suspect who was allegedly working for a trafficking ring took the girls to the passport office claiming they were her daughters who needed the passports to travel out. Read more

Court remands lady for defrauding German of N110m (Punch)

A 21-year-old lady, Cynthia Atuonah, was on Monday remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos for allegedly defrauding a German of N110m.

Justice Yelim Bogoro ordered the remand of the defendant after she took her plea.

The defendant is facing five counts of obtaining by false pretences, fraud and unlawful conversation preferred against her by the Police Special Fraud Unit.

Court remands 5 suspects for killing Lagos policeman (Punch)

A Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, on Friday remanded five men for alleged conspiracy and the murder of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mathew Aniaguru, in the Imota area of the state.

The defendants, Shakiru Shittu, Kadir Shonoki, Shadiku Adeola, Taofeek Aluko, and Adekunle Onasanya, were remanded by Magistrate P. E. Nwaka, on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 6, 2023, at the Emuren Junction, Imota, in the Ikorodu area of the state. Read more

NDLEA intercepts 8,852kg cannabis being escorted by armed men (Punch)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted and seized 8,852kg of Canadian loud, an imported synthetic strain of cannabis, at Eleko Road in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Babafemi said the seizure was made when operatives of the agency engaged armed persons escorting the illegal substance in a gun duel for about 30 minutes.

Lagos landlord arraigned for beating female tenant (Punch)

A 48-year-old Lagos landlord, Kehinde Davies, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba, for allegedly beating up his female tenant.

Davies, an auto dealer, who was arraigned by the police before Magistrate O. I. Raji, on Thursday, is facing a two-count bordering on battering and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

We recovered weapons at Alaba shanties – Lagos police (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Friday said its men raided some shanties around the popular Alaba International Market in the Ojo Local Government Area of the state while acting on credible information.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this via his Twitter handle while denying online reports that the market was gutted by fire.

He stated that some suspected criminals were arrested after the raid while weapons were recovered from them. Read more

Dispatch rider, another held over stolen motorcycle (Nation)

Police operatives attached to the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have arrested a dispatch rider, Ekele Sunday, 28, and his alleged accomplice, Yakubu Abdurrahman, 28, over a stolen motorcycle.

The duo allegedly conspired to sell the motorcycle which belonged to a logistics company in the state, Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said in a statement yesterday.

He said the suspects were arrested at Oke-Koto, Agege, when operatives, acting on credible intelligence, stormed the area. Read more 

Ataga: Court admits defendant’s statements in murder trial (Nation)

ALagos High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), yesterday admitted in evidence the two handwritten statements made by Chidinma Ojukwu, the alleged killer of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, 49.

Trial judge, Justice Yetunde Adesanya, in her ruling, said the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt, the voluntariness of the defendant’s statements.

In the course of the trial within trial, the defendant had objected to the admissibility of her confessional statements to the police, alleging they were made under duress. Read more

Customs arrests 10 suspects, seizes N788m goods (Nation)

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ Ikeja,  said its operatives arrested 10 suspects in connection with smuggled goods intercepted by officials last month.

The intercepted prohibited goods were said to be worth over N746 million.

Addressing reporters in Lagos yesterday, the Acting Controller of the unit, Deputy Comptroller Hussein Kehinde Ejibunu, said the seizures included 8,309 (50kg) bags of foreign parboiled rice, equivalent to 14 trailer loads; 2,428 (25 liter kegs) of premium motor spirit (PMS) and  221 cartons of foreign frozen poultry products. Whitney: Coroner cautions lawyers against delay (Guardian)

The inquest set up by Lagos State government to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of Chrisland Schools, Whitney Adeniran, yesterday, cautioned against unnecessary questions.

Magistrate Olabisi Fajana said such irrelevant questions by counsel would delay the conclusion of the inquest.

The warning followed a request by  Olukayode Enitan,  one of  the school’s counsel,  seeking the picture of the student posted on social media by her father after her death. Read more
