DisCos demand justice for military attack on Ikeja Electric staff, journalists (Guardian)

The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED) has called on the Nigerian Air Force, the military, and the presidency to identify and hold accountable the officers responsible for the brutal attack on Ikeja Electric (IKEDC) staff and journalists at the company’s headquarters in Alausa, Lagos.

The attack, carried out by armed personnel from the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, Ikeja, left multiple individuals injured. ANED has vowed not to relent until justice is served.

Following the assault, the Area Officer Commanding, Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal AK Ademulegun, visited the IKEDC office later on Thursday, promising an investigation. Read more

President Bola Tinubu has led tributes for a former presidential spokesman Doyin Okupe who died on Friday morning, describing the late politician as one who played “a significant role in Nigeria’s political landscape”.

Okupe died at 72 following a battle with illness.

In his tribute to the Ogun-born politician, Tinubu’s spokesman Bayo Onanuga said Okupe was “a bold and articulate advocate for national development” and expressed “deep sorrow over his passing at a time when his wealth of experience and insight were still invaluable to the nation”. Read more 

Nigerian diocese pays tribute to priest who was murdered on Ash Wednesday (CNA)

The Diocese of Kafanchan in Nigeria is paying tribute to Father Sylvester Okechukwu, a diocesan priest who was murdered on Ash Wednesday, March 5.

According to the information provided by the Diocese of Kafanchan, Okechukwu was kidnapped from his residence at about 9:15 p.m. on March 4.

After being taken by his abductors, the 45-year-old priest was killed in the early hours of Ash Wednesday. Read more 

Women activists attack Senate for suspending Akpoti-Uduaghan (Sun)

The decision by the Senate to place Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on a six-month suspension without salaries or allowances for violation of the Standing Rules 2023 (as amended) and for bringing the presiding officer and entire Senate in general to public opprobrium has stirred mixed reactions.

On February 20, Akpoti-Uduaghan clashed with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, over seat reassignments in the parliament. Following the incident, she alleged that her troubles in the chamber began after rejecting amorous advances from Akpabio.

Mother tackles Lagos school over daughter’s eye injury (Punch)

A mother, Mrs Charity Obisco, has accused the management of a Lagos-based school of abandoning her 10-year-old daughter, Mary, after she was stabbed in the eye by a classmate.

Charity told PUNCH Metro on Sunday that the incident occurred on October 11, 2024.

She explained that the school’s headmistress had informed her of the incident and requested that she meet them at the hospital.

Charity stated that her daughter underwent surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, which was paid for by the mother of the boy who allegedly stabbed her. Read more 

Lagos empowers disabled persons with skills (VON)

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, has provided vocational training and startup tools to empower persons with disabilities across the state.

A total of 300 beneficiaries received specialized training in leatherwork, hairdressing, barbing, arts and crafts, phone repairs, and makeup artistry. Upon completion, they were each equipped with essential tools to facilitate the establishment of their businesses, fostering economic independence and inclusivity.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Alausa Ikeja, Lagos, with the theme “Removing Barriers” Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, said that the initiative is a deliberate attempt by the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu to remove the impediments preventing people with disability from participating in programmes that contribute to their wellbeing. Pizza delivery man runs into burning home to save 5 children, jumps from second floor holding child (Upworthy)

In a heroic act, a 25-year-old pizza deliveryman risked his life to save five children from a burning home in Indiana. Nicholas Bostic was driving by in the dead of night when he saw the house engulfed in flames. His immediate instinct was to run inside and help. Entering through the back door, Bostic braved thick clouds of smoke to rescue four children, ranging from ages 1 to 18. He then re-entered to save a fifth child, a 6-year-old, ultimately escaping by jumping through a window with her in his arms, using his own body to break the fall.

The incident happened in Lafayette, Indiana, and the Lafayette Police Department confirmed that the child was “miraculously mostly uninjured,” reported PEOPLE. Bostic sustained severe smoke inhalation and a deep arm wound. When first responders arrived, his first words were, “Please tell me that baby is OK.”  Read more

Mexico seizes 275,000 fentanyl pills from boxes of sliced cactus bound for Arizona (CBS)

Authorities in northern Mexico on Wednesday found about 70 pounds of fentanyl hidden inside boxes of sliced cactus, a quintessential Mexican food staple known as nopales.

Mexican law enforcement said they seized some 275,000 pills of the lethal drug in the border state of Sonora, on its way to Arizona, and that they arrested a 29-year-old man. The drugs were valued at about $6.5 million. Authorities found both pills and the drug in powder form.

The seizure took place at a military checkpoint on the Mexican highway connecting the northern states of Sinaloa and Sonora, where officers searched a trailer carrying packets of nopales. Read more
