Give blood, give life — Gbubemi Atimomo

  1. I’m pleased to read this piece. It raises awareness and would go a long way to encourage others to donate.

My next level of advocacy now is to get individuals, multinationals, NGOs, International communities and sponsors to subsidize blood screening fees to the lowest minimum.

In my findings, I realized that people would not mind donating but their single most dissatisfied aspect is the amount you will have to pay for screening when blood is needed.

I was a victim of this same issue when my wife was operated upon for CS at the FMC, Abeokuta on 4th September 2023. Two blood pints were booked for her which were not eventually used after the CS but I was made to pay N15,000 for screening of the unused blood. I believe only used blood should be paid for while the unused should be returned to the bank. I consider this to be unfair, unjust and in fact corruption.

I believe these are some of the reasons Nigerians are cold about donating blood.

Another sad tail was the fact that I was denied donating at the same FMC, Abeokuta for a reason best known to the person in charge. I believe an ssessment of my BP and sample blood on PCV, HBV, HIV and other screening should determine if I would be fit to donate or not.

If I would be chanced, I intend donating on 27th September 2023 which would be on my birthday and the marking of my 34th time altruistic blood donation.

If I put the trauma I went through at FMC, Abeokuta into perspective, I would NEVER donate again but my life time course towards humanity goes beyond the failed Health System of Nigeria. As such, until I am unable to donate due to age or other factors, I shall continue to give the gift of life.

    Regards,
    A frustrated Nigerian youth.
A victim of the Nigerian failed system.
    A dedicated hardworking Nigerian youth.
