Lagos can meet needs of residents, says commissioner (Punch)
The Lagos State Government says it can meet the needs of residents, urging them to use the services of its ministries, departments and agencies. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kazeem Adeniji, stated this on Wednesday at a one-day symposium in Alausa, Ikeja, on the bouquet of services available in Lagos State, organised by the Public Advice Centre, Lagos State Ministry of Justice. The commissioner, who was represented at the event by the Administrator General and Public Trustee, Mrs Mariam Olaniyi, added that although statistics indicated a fair increase in the engagement of MDAs by citizens, it was still a far cry from the desired figures. Lagos to start allocating houses October – Official (PremiumTimes)
The Lagos State Government (LASG) has reassured prospective home-owners that they will celebrate the next Christmas in their new homes, saying allocation of the houses will start in October. The state Commissioner for Housing, Gbolahan Lawal, said this after an inspection tour of some of the housing projects in parts of the state on Wednesday. Mr Lawal said that the initial pre-qualification arrangement toward the allocation of some housing units to beneficiaries had begun. He listed the estates ready for allocation to include: Phase II of the Oba Adegboruwa Estate, Igbogbo in Ikorodu; Amowo-Odofin Housing Scheme and the Igando Gardens Estate. Read more
LASG seeks cooperation among emergency workers (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has called for cooperation among emergency management workers in the state. The state Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Relations, Mr Oluseye Oladejo, said such was important for effectiveness in response to emergencies in the state. Oladejo spoke at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency 2018 Quarterly Stakeholders Meeting at Ikeja. The event, with the theme, ‘Coordination: An Integral Tool in Emergency/Disaster Response,’ was attended by emergency management workers from both the state and federal government agencies. Read more
Customs seizes N1.17 billion codeine syrup in Lagos (Guardian)
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) yesterday seized a truckload of codeine cough syrup (100mg) in Lagos, valued at over N1.17 billion. The Federal Government had banned the production and importation of cough syrup containing codeine a few months ago after a report alerted on its role in drug addiction epidemic. Controller in charge of Federal Operations Unit (FOU) ‘A’ Ikeja, Mohammed Uba, who paraded other products like Tramadol, Indian hemp and Pangolin, among others, warned smugglers to desist from the illicit trade or face the wrath of the law. LASU VC dismisses alleged compromise in his appointment (Punch)
The Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof Olanrewaju Fagbohun, has dismissed the allegation that the rules were bent for him to get the institution’s top job in 2016. According to him, those behind the allegation were out to undermine the peace and order, which he restored into the institution that was enmeshed in restiveness and crises before his appointment. The Vice-Chancellor said this on Tuesday while giving an appraisal of his administration in the last two years during a media chat. Read more
Lagos community where pregnant women opt for unorthodox antenatal (ThisDay)
Abike Ahmed is an expectant mother, who is six months gone already. In those six months, Ahmed has not visited a hospital for the much needed ante-natal or a health centre. As one of the inhabitants of Irede community, a riverine community at Abule-Osu, which is off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, she is today still coping without a health facility. For her, she combines both orthodox and traditional methods simultaneously. Although she registered at the Ojo General Hospital, she has never visited for antenatal care because of the distance from her place of residence. She said, “There is no hospital here at Irede. Although I registered at Ojo Hospital, but I go to one mama’s place and she gives me ‘agbo’ (a local herbal concoction) to drink for my baby.” Read more
Harpic renovates 25 public toilets in Lagos communities (Vanguard)
Reckitt Benckiser, RB has partnered with the Lagos State Ministry of Environment to upgrade and refurbished 25 public toilet units for four communities in Lagos State in its bid to tackle open defecation. RB, maker of various hygiene and home brands, such as Dettol, Mortein, Airwick, Durex, Nurofen, Gaviscon and the toilet cleaning brand, Harpic, said the initiative aimed to provide hygienic toilets for every Nigerian as a way of discouraging open defecation. Lagos transports 1,273 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for Hajj (PremiumTimes)
AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, the Lagos State commissioner for home affairs, says a total of 1,273 pilgrims have so far been transported to Saudi Arabia for the 2018 Hajj. Mr AbdulLateef, who doubles as the Amir-ul Hajj, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos. “So far, we have successfully transported 1,273 out of a total of 2000 pilgrims in four flights for this year’s hajj. “The transporting of the remaining 727 pilgrims is expected to resume on Friday. “Government is also doing all within its legal framework to guard against any impediment that may cause unnecessary delay or inconveniences to the pilgrims,” he said. MTN empowers women in Lagos, youths in Oyo (Vanguard)
MTN Nigeria has empowered 100 women from the Police Officers Wives’ Association (POWA), Lagos State chapter, with the provision of mobile stalls to sell products such as airtime and data through the use of digital gadgets. At the commissioning ceremony, Lagos State Commissioner of Environment, who was represented by the General Manager, Lagos State Parks and Gardens, Bilikiss Adebiyi- Abiola, said: “We are glad that MTN is making conscious effort to give back to the community and also beautify Lagos through the renovation of the POWA Shopping Complex Corridor here in Ikoyi and we are glad that Lagos State is gradually becoming a greener and healthier environment.” Read more

Undergraduate buys N1m phones with fake debit alert, flees (Punch)
A member of the National Youth Service Corps, Azeez Bakare, has accused a 400-level Computer Science undergraduate of the University of Lagos, Eric Idowu, of absconding with phones valued at N1m, after allegedly purchasing the products with a fake bank alert. Idowu had on Thursday, August 2, 2018, allegedly used a fake name, Leonard Adegoke, to order for the items from Bakare. Bakare, 22, said Idowu had remained elusive since the items were delivered to him at his house. He said, “Apart from being a corps member, I run a mobile phone business. On Thursday, August 2, around 4.30pm, I received a call from a customer, who identified himself as Leonard Adeleke. He ordered for three used iPhone 8 Plus and one brand new iPhone X. The address he gave me was no 20, University Road, Abule-Oja, Yaba, Lagos. I went there to deliver the goods around 7pm the same day. Read more
Friend kills Lagos driver to date girlfriend (Punch)
A 28-year-old bus driver, Abraham Umar, has been killed by suspected cult members at Cele bus stop, in the Ijanikin area of Lagos State. The police said the victim was set up by his friend who was obsessed with his (Abraham’s) 17-year-old girlfriend. Punch Metro learnt that Abraham, aka Abi, was eating at the girlfriend’s mother’s bamboo restaurant when the gunmen invaded the place around 9pm on Tuesday. They reportedly shot the Benue State indigene in the head, killing him on the spot. Read more
Policeman intervenes in Agboyi-Ketu communal clash (Punch)
An unidentified policeman has been photographed trying to save some motorcycles that were set on fire during a communal clash in Agboyi-Ketu area of Lagos. The photos, which were posted on Twitter by Malik Nasir @malikandu, on Wednesday showed the policeman bending to get water from an open drainage and pouring same on the burning pile of motorcycles. Nasir wrote: “I adore the bravery of this officer yesterday amidst Agboyi – Ketu okada riders and community members clash, which claimed a life. This police officer ceaselessly drew water from the dirty drainage channels to douse raging fire on assembled okada and burning kiosks around. Even the residents stayed off and were watching him from afar. May God continue to be with him and his family wherever they are. Kudos to him.” Read more

Ambode’s cash bonus awaits Nigerian winners at ITTF Challenge in Lagos (ThisDay)
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has promised to give cash bonuses to successful Nigerian players participating at the ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open which begins today in Lagos. 169 players made up of 101 men and 68 women from 26 countries will compete in six events at the five-day competition which has become Africa’s elite tournament sanctioned by the world table tennis ruling body – International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). $46,000 prize is at stake for winners to share. The Director General of the Lagos State Sport Commission (LSSC), Babatunde Bank-Anthony disclosed this yesterday at the press conference heralding the tournament. Read more
