Lagos man arrested for robbing online vendors (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Olumide Agboola for robbing online vendors in the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Monday, said the suspect’s modus operandi was to pose as a genuine buyer on social media platforms, order items and request vendors to supply the items at designated hotels, where he would then rob them.
He said, “Police operatives attached to the Makinde Division have arrested 44-year-old Olumide Agboola, who is notorious for robbing online vendors.
“He was arrested following a painstaking investigation which was launched after a number of reports were received about his activities. Different CCTV footage at his various crime scenes have aided in the irrefutable identification of the suspect. Read more

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents to continuously ensure that Lagos remains politically stable for continuous peace, which the state currently enjoys as the most peaceful in the country.
Sanwo-Olu made the call on Sunday during a meeting with leaders of the Lagos State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by its president, Chief Solomon Ogbonna, and the Ohanaeze Political Forum led by its chairman, Chief Chris Ekwilo, at the Lagos House, Marina.
The governor said the 2023 elections for Lagos residents, especially the Igbo, should be about who had the best interest of the nation at heart, as well as about a person, who over the years, has created opportunities without consideration for tribal interests and has given a genuine platform for people to thrive, live and work well.
Sanwo-Olu noted that there was no part of Lagos that one form of development was not happening, assuring that his administration would continue to push development in every nook and cranny of the state. Read more
NAFDAC, SON petitioned over sale of unregistered products on social media (Vanguard)
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON , have been petitioned over sale of unregistered cosmetics products on social media platforms by some individuals.
A Port Harcourt-based public interest lawyer, Azubuike Ihemeje, had petitioned NAFDAC and SON over the sale of unregistered cosmetics products on social media platforms, especially on Facebook.
The lawyer particularly pinpointed the activities of one Angela Nwosu and others whom he alleged were selling concoctions capable of posing danger to public health.
He claimed the advertisement and promotion of the illegal products by Nwosu and cohorts was in flagrant breach of sections 2,3,4 and 5 of the NAFDAC Act 2004.
The petition read in part: “It is in the light of the above that we very respectfully, forward this public interest petition and request your urgent and immediate intervention on the subject under reference. Read more

The new leadership of the Lions Club International District 404A1 Nigeria, Lion Anogwi Anyanwu, has announced plans to cater for the welfare of not less than two million Nigerians for the 2022/2023 Lions year.
The new District Governor of the District 404A1 Nigeria, Lion Anogwi Anyanwu, who joined the Club in 1995 disclosed during the club’s Fundraising and Presentation Ceremony held at the Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos to raise funds towards the seamless execution of service for the Lions Service Year.

Arewa youths, Egbesu clash over Tompolo’s pipelines protection contract (Nation)
The Amalgamated Arewa Youth Groups (AAYG) and the Supreme Egbesu Order (SEO) on Monday differed on the over N4 billion monthly contract awarded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to a former Niger Delta agitator, Government Ekpemupolo, for the protection of oil pipelines.
While AAYG held a protest against the contract in Abuja, SEO warned the northern group to desist from making further hateful actions against Tompolo.
The Arewa youth groups had during the protest at the NNPC limited headquarters in Abuja, called on the government to either cancel the contract or shut down the Amnesty Programme office in the Niger Delta.
It argued that it was unfair that the contract would be funded from the public treasury at a time the North was not getting significant support from the Federal Government to tackle the activities of terrorists. Read more

Barely 24 hours after Daily Trust Report, the police have rearraigned the student who knocked down Fatima Suleiman with a car as a result of which one of her legs was amputated.
Daily Trust reliably gathered that the case had also been withdrawn from the magistrate who earlier granted bail to the culprit.
The police have also amended the charges for the second time and the new charges included grievous hurt.
Our reporter learnt that the new magistrate on Monday remanded the culprit, Aliyu Sunusi Umar, in the Sokoto Correctional Centre till next Monday when the case would come up for further hearing. Read more
Only 2% access clean water, 21% defecate openly in Bauchi – WaterAid (Guardian)
WaterAid Nigeria has said that only 2 percent of the Bauchi State population could access “safely managed” water while 21 percent of the residents defecate openly which it said worsened the cholera outbreak in 2021.
The State Coordinator of Women Development Association for Self Sustainable (WODASS), Ezekiel Sukumun who spoke on behalf of WaterAid Nigeria on its programme,‘Hygiene Behaviour Change’ said that “81 percent of the population lack access to basic hygiene and 74 percent of the population consume contaminated water.”
Ezekiel said that with good hygiene practices recommended as the first line of defence in the prevention of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, Bauchi State is currently performing below average in the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene services.
“The Water, Sanitation, Hygiene National Outcome Routine Mapping Survey 2021 (WASHNORMS 2021) shows that 81% of the people in Bauchi State lack access to basic hygiene services, while 21% still practice open defecation, an act which pollutes the environment and water bodies, contributing to the consumption of E. coli contaminated water by 74% of the population. Osinbajo To Launch Energy Transition Plan Targeting Improved Power In 8 Years (DailyTrust)
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, is set to launch Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP), a set of strategies for the country to attain universal access to energy by 2030, as well as a carbon-neutral energy system by 2060.
A statement signed by Director of Communications, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforAll), Sherry Kennedy, on Tuesday, said Osinbajo, will lead other stakeholders to launch the energy transition plan in Abuja on Wednesday.
The plan which is supported by Sustainable Energy for All, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet is aimed at mapping out strategies for Nigeria to provide enough energy to power industries and other productive uses.
The launch will also feature remarks from prominent officials from Nigeria, Rwanda, Egypt and Senegal as well as international community leaders from the United Nations, Sustainable Energy for All, The World Bank, African Development Bank, IRENA, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet. Student nurse Owami Davies has been found ‘safe and well’ in Hampshire almost eight weeks after she went missing.
She had last been seen walking north along London Road in Croydon on July 7 and concerns had been growing for her safety with media appeals to find her.
The Metropolitan Police said Tuesday afternoon that Ms Davies had been found ‘as a result of a call to police from someone who had seen media appeals’.
They said the call was the 118th reported sighting officers had received and was made at 10.30 Tuesday.
‘She appears fit and well cared for,’ police said in a statement. ‘Owami’s family have been informed and they have spoken to her. Read more
Twitter whistleblower raises security concerns (BBC)
A former security chief for Twitter has turned whistleblower and testified that the company misled users and US regulators about gaps in its security.
Peiter Zatko also claimed that Twitter underestimated how many fake and spam accounts are on its platform.
The accusations could affect a legal battle between Twitter and billionaire Elon Musk, who is trying to cancel his $44bn (£37bn) deal to buy the company.
Twitter says Mr Zatko’s allegations are inaccurate and inconsistent.
It says he was sacked in January for ineffective leadership and poor performance. Read more

The Weeknd‘s concert in Las Vegas over the weekend was the scene of a huge fire that reportedly destroyed a trailer carrying some of the singer’s merchandise.
According to Fox News, a large fire erupted late Saturday night (August 20) outside Allegiant Stadium as fans were exiting the show. Local firefighters responded to the blaze shortly before 11 p.m. and got the flames under control quite quickly.
While it’s not clear exactly what started the blaze, videos online appeared to show a bus or trailer engulfed by flames in a parking lot connected to the stadium.
It was reported later on that The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn merchandise truck was destroyed in the fire (via Variety). Read more

Singer Tom Parker has been posthumously shortlisted for a National Television Award following his death from a brain tumour at the age of 33.
The Wanted star made a documentary, Inside My Head, about living with the illness and organising a fundraising concert in aid of cancer charities in 2021, after being diagnosed with the inoperable growth the previous year.
Parker, who died at a hospice near his home in southeast London on 30 March, is shortlisted for the authored documentary NTA alongside TV presenter Kate Garraway for her programme Caring For Derek, sharing insights into her husband Derek Draper’s struggle with the long-term effects of coronavirus.

Ahead of the film’s world premiere next month at TIFF, Netflix has released the first trailer for Tyler Perry’s “A Jazzman’s Blues,” the billionaire media mogul’s longtime passion project.

“Reliable Sources,” and its host, appear to be the first prominent casualties in CNN’s effort to become less confrontational politically, a priority of Chris Licht, who became the network’s chairman and CEO in the spring, and his boss, David Zaslav, head of the Warner Bros. Discovery parent company.
Stelter has written a book, “Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth” and been critical of Fox News, making him a frequent target of CNN’s conservative critics.
Licht has made it known internally that he’s not interested in conflict between CNN and Fox News on the network. The CNN “New Day” anchor Brianna Keilar had also attracted attention for detailed critical pieces on Fox, but they have stopped since Licht took over. Read more
US, Ukraine warn Russia could attack on eve of Ukraine’s independence day (PBS)
On the eve of Ukraine’s independence day and Russia’s invasion of its neighbor reaching the six-month mark, warnings that Moscow might plan to commemorate the events by attacking significant government and civilian targets caused unease in the war-weary country Tuesday.
The United States reinforced the worry when its embassy in Kyiv urged U.S. citizens still in Ukraine to depart the country immediately. The State Department issued a security alert, saying it “has information that Russia is stepping up efforts to launch strikes against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government facilities in the coming days.”
The U.S. warning came on the heels of Russia claiming that Ukrainian intelligence was responsible for a weekend car bombing outside Moscow that killed the daughter of a leading right-wing Russian political theorist. Ukraine denied involvement.

Real Madrid midfielder Carlos Casemiro has officially completed his transfer to Manchester United.
According to an official statement on the Manchester United website, the midfielder has signed a contract until June 2026, with the option to extend for a further year.

A spectator accused by Nick Kyrgios of having “about 700 drinks” during this year’s Wimbledon final is suing the Australian tennis star for defamation.
Kyrgios had complained to the umpire about the behaviour of spectator Anna Palus during his four-set loss to Novak Djokovic on Centre Court.
He made the remarks shortly after receiving a code violation for swearing after a spectator called out before his second serve.
Kyrgios could be heard imploring umpire Renaud Lichtenstein to have the woman “who looks like she’s had about 700 drinks bro” ejected. Read more
Will Zalatoris withdraws from Tour Championship, Presidents Cup with 2 herniated discs (ESPN)
Will Zalatoris will not be able to participate in the season-ending Tour Championship because of two herniated discs in his back, it was announced Tuesday.
In addition to not playing in the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale at East Lake Golf Club, Zalatoris also will not be able to compete at next month’s Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow.
“After Will’s withdrawal from the BMW Championship on Saturday, his medical team determined that the source of his back pain is two herniated discs,” a spokesman for Zalatoris said. “Unfortunately, this means Will is unable to play this week at the Tour Championship.

Former Bulls’ guard Dwayne Wade violates water-saving ordinance in Los Angeles (NBC)
Dwayne Wade, former Chicago Bulls guard, received a “notice of exceedance” acknowledging the excessive amount of water he is using amidst a drought in Los Angeles.
The notice from the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District is sent to those who have surpassed 150 percent of their monthly water budget at least four times since the new rules to preserve water were established.
“Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union, exceeded their water budget by a whopping 1,400 percent in June—roughly 90,000 gallons of water over the allocated amount,” according to Newsweek. “In May, their property exceeded the budget by 489,000 gallons.”
The couple released a statement saying they were “doing everything we can to rectify the situation and will continue to go to extensive lengths to resolve the issue.” Read more
