Lagos residents told to get PVC (Punch)
Lagosians have been advised to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, which will enable them to choose who will govern them in 2019. The Chairman, Ikorodu Development Association (IKODASS), Mr Ganiu Abiru, at a ‘One Million-Man March for PVC’ rally on Saturday, added that the PVCs would ensure participation of Nigerians in Lagos and other states of the federation in the 2019 elections. He said the rally was meant to sensitise the residents to the importance of obtaining their PVCs. “Your PVC is your future; if you have not obtained your PVC, the time to do that is now. “We know there are challenges in the process of PVC collection; but I want to encourage you to surmount the challenges in order to have a say in 2019. Lagos deploys drones to health sector (Nation)
The Lagos State government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Zipline International Inc, operators of drones, to offer a drone-enabled supply chain solution in the health sector. The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Hakeem Fahm, who spoke during the signing of the deal at the weekend, said the deal was based on the health care initiatives of the Governor Akinwumi Ambode. He said the partnership would leverage technology to improve the supply chain of critical medical supplies, reduce waste and save lives. According to him, the drones will be used to ensure secured, reliable and timely deliveries of essential health care products to publicly-owned hospitals and other health facilities in the State. Lawmaker seeks empowerment for youths (Punch)
The member representing Mushin Constituency II, Lagos, Bolaji Ayinla, has called for quality empowerment for youths and the less privileged to reduce unemployment. The APC chieftain urged political leaders to provide means of livelihood to the people rather than reduce them to servants. Ayinla, who spoke on Sunday during his ‘Economic Empowerment Programme’ in Mushin, said there was the need to bridge the gap between the leaders and the led. He said, “I don’t want people to be servants; everybody must be equal. We should not reduce people to servants. LASG wants good behaviour from pilgrims (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has urged intending Christian pilgrims in the state to be good ambassadors of the state and Nigeria as a whole. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs Toyin Awoseyi, during the 2018 service of dedication for intending pilgrims to Israel at Chapel of Christ the Light in Ikeja, added that there was the need to sustain the excellence which the state had been known for. Lagos lawmaker canvases improved welfare for police (Guardian)
Lawmaker representing Lagos East zone, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, has called on officers of the Nigerian Police Force to cooperate with the new chairman, Nigerian Police Service Commission, former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Musiliu Smith to ensure proper and adequate welfare for the establishment. Ashafa who expressed satisfaction over the confirmation and clearance of the former IG by the senate committee on Wednesday said the appointment of Smith would in no doubt transform for the better the welfare and functions of the security agencies based on his vast experience and exposure. Ambode commends ‘Home & You’ on furniture factory (Punch)
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has commended the Chief Executive Officer and founder of ‘The Home and You’, Mrs. Feyisola Abiru, for its new modern furniture factory, urging Nigerians to continue to patronise locally made products. Speaking during the inauguration of the facility in Ikorodu Lagos, the governor said the factory would produce industrial made-in-Nigeria furniture that could compete globally for both corporate and home use within and outside Nigeria, noting that “it is only through this means that the local economy could be developed.” Ambode, who was represented by the commissioners for Physical Planning and Urban Development, and Commerce and Industry, Mr Rotimi Ogunleye and Mrs Olayinka Oladunayo, described the sitting of the factory at Ibeshe, a suburb of Ikorodu, as a key driver for the economy of the state and the country at large. Traffic mayors hold workshop for Lagos drivers (Guardian)
In a bid to complement government’s effort at curbing the menace of traffic in the metropolis, as well as reduce the number of avoidable road crashes, the Special Traffic Mayors (STM) Corps at the weekend held a one-day public enlightenment programme on road management for Lagos drivers. Held at the Alaagba motor park in Iyana Ipaja, the event was aimed at exposing road users, stakeholders and members of the public to various dangers inherent in their behaviour on the road. In his lecture on the ‘4 Es’ principles and approaches to road safety, Special Traffic Mayor (STM) Corps Commandant, Lagos, Othman Tajudeen, noted that engineering, enlightenment, enforcement and evaluation were compulsory measures that should be adopted by all road users to prevent accidents. Nigeria is notorious for its horrible maintenance culture. Virtually all amenities built by successive regimes at the federal level – airports, seaports, police and military barracks/bases, roads, railways and what have you – are in deplorable conditions due to our inability to maintain them when due. The story appears to be slightly different when it comes to the longest bridge in Nigeria – the 12-kilometre, eight-lane Third Mainland Bridge inaugurated by former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida in 1990. After years of neglect when the joints had already started getting separated, it was closed for four months between July and November 2012 by the President Goodluck Jonathan regime for comprehensive repairs. Apapa gridlock : Lagos task force frees service lane to ease traffic (Vanguard)
The Joint Task Force set up by the Lagos State Government involving security agencies and stakeholders in the maritime sector to remove all containerized trucks and tankers parked along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway has opened up the service lane in the axis. Speaking with reporters after inspecting the progress of the operation in company of heads of security agencies and other stakeholders, Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson, said it was gratifying to report that the Task Force was able to free the road from Toyota to Mile 2 in a rigorous operation which lasted for 72 hours between Friday and Sunday. After another joint security meeting at the Command Officers Mess, Onikan, Lagos, on the intractable traffic snarl at the Apapa Port and its environs weekend, security chiefs in Lagos State resolved that the problem should be prevented from resulting into a breakdown of law and order in any part of the state. The meeting was the second within four days by the security chiefs in the state as trucks, mostly container trailers and fuel tankers, formed kilometres of queues along the two routes of the Apapa port-Ijora-Ikorodu Road and Tin Can Island port-Mile 2-Oshodi expressway, causing traffic jams in which vehicles are stuck for many hours daily. Winners’ Chapel declares 7-Day Fast to rescue Nigeria (Independent)
Bishop David Oyedepo, the President, the Living Faith Church International, also known as Winners’ Chapel, has declared a seven-day prayer and fasting from July 23-29, 2018 “to rescue the terrorised soul of Nigeria.” Oyedepo made the announcement in a memo to all the commission’s mission stations, a copy of which was made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja. Ikoyi, VI, others to face water shortage (Nation)
Some parts of Lagos may be without water as the State Water Corporation (LSWC) embarks on a four-days repair of its major pipes, its Groups Managing Director (GMD) Muminu Badmus, said yesterday. The repair, which started on Saturday on pipes on Carter Bridge-Iddo axis, would end on Wednesday, Badmus said. He said: “The water leakage at Carter Bridge is 600mm diameter pipe between Oyingbo and Iddo Motorway would be affected. This will lead to disruption in water supply to major parts of Lagos metropolis. “The parts of Lagos that will experience disruption in water supply during the repair are: Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Surulere, Yaba and Ebute Metta. Long vehicle mishaps in Lagos: An indictment of LASTMA? (Independent)
Against the backdrop of the parlous traffic situation in metropolitan Lagos, which often witnesses motorists being stuck in traffic for hours on end, Lagos State Government in 2000 created the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to tackle the challenge. Part of the reasons why the state government set up LASTMA, an agency under the Ministry of Transport, was the need to transform the state transportation system to ensure free flow of traffic and reduce the number of fatal accidents on Lagos roads. ‘Why we prevent truck drivers from locking down Lagos’ (DailyTrust)
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal said yesterday that the command will ensure that the Funsho Williams Avenue and Oshodi Apapa expressway are not locked down by drivers of petroleum tankers and haulage trucks. Edgal, in a telephone chat with Daily Trust, described the activities of the truck drivers as embarrassment to the state and Federal Governments. The command in conjunction with other security agencies had embarked on consultations with stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problem. Edgal said: “Sequel to the activities of the petroleum tankers and haulage trucks drivers, along the Funsho Williams Avenue and Oshodi/Apapa Expressway, which have continued to cause a perennial gridlock on the affected roads and constitute a serious embarrassment to the State and Federal Governments, the Command embarked on series of consultations with the Stakeholders in order to find a lasting solution to the problem and its attendant consequences on the law abiding citizens plying the routes. The maiden edition of the Pro-Chancellor’s Distinguished Endowed Annual Lecture Series will hold today at the J. F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium of University of Lagos (UNILAG). The lecture, entitled: “Responding to Nigeria”s disease outbreaks and epidemics: Ebola, Zika and HIV, will be delivered by Phyllis Kanki, a professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases from Harvard School of Public Health, United States of America (USA). Nigerians and the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) have lauded singer, Folarin Falana a.k.a Falz for addressing sexual violence in his latest music video. The reactions came after the award wining artiste announced the release of the video titled “Child of the world” on his social media platform @falzthebahdguy FALZ – “Child Of The World” official video out” According to DSVRT, it acknowledged Falz’s effort to speak up about “real life issues” on their official twitter account. @DSVRT “We would like to use this medium to appreciate Falz for spreading the word on Sexual Abuse in the recently released video for his song, Child of the World. Police arrest 5 PDP Chieftains over killing of LG Chairman in Lagos (Independent)
The Lagos State Police Command, on Sunday said it has detained five PDP chieftains in the state for interrogation over the killing of one Mr Borishade Adeniyi, Chairman , PDP Apapa Chapter. The arrest was confirmed by the command’s spokesman, CSP Chike Oti in a statement, stressing that what was supposed to be a peaceful political meeting of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members ended in unnecessary bloodletting. “In a swift reaction, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Imohimi Edgal, directed the Area Commander in-charge of Area ‘J’ Elemoro, to ensure the arrests of all those involved in the crime. 4 cops dismissed for extorting N7m from cleric (Punch)
Four policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the Lagos State Command have been dismissed for alleged professional misconduct, corrupt practices and discreditable conduct. The names of the dismissed officers were given as Adeoye Adekunle, Adeniran Adebowale, Agbi Lucky and Odighe Hehosa. It was gathered that the men were charged to court on offences of armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful detention, intimidation and threatening violence against one Mr Chukwudi Odionye, aka Bishop. The Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 2 Police Command, CSP Dolapo Badmus, in a statement said the command received a petition by Odionye against the four officers on May 2, 2018. Read more
Man escapes from court, jumps into canal to evade arrest (DailyTrust
A mild drama occurred on Friday at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s court, when a 38-year-old man, Mr. Segun Mabaoreje, in a bid to escape justice, ran out of the court room and jumped into a canal. It took the intervention of policemen attached to the magistrate to rearrest the suspect who is being tried for robbery and illegal possession of fire arms. The prosecutor, Inspector G. Simon, prepared another charge and he was arraigned for attempting to escape. The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.K.J. Layeni, did not grant him bail as his attempted escape happened while the court was in session. Read more
SARS men torture musician for allegedly being yahoo boy (Punch)
An artiste, Richie Sunday, aka Dollamachine, has accused some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of unlawfully arresting and torturing him. Sunday said he was arrested around 12pm on Thursday, July 19, 2018, in the Iyana-Oworo area of Lagos State. He added that the policemen said he was a yahoo boy (Internet fraudster). Punch Metro learnt that the 26-year-old was on his way to a supermarket to buy some drinks before the SARS operatives accosted him, telling him to enter a commercial bus. The musician also said when he requested for the identity of the officer that initially stopped him, he and other members of his team allegedly pounced on him using the butts of their guns and sticks to beat him up, injuring him in the process. Israelis Misha Zilberman and Ksenia Polikarpova have emerged champions in the men and women categories of this year’s Lagos International Badminton Classics held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Molade Okoya-Thomas at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere. Zilberman defeated Malaysia’s Misbun Ramdan Mohmed Misbun 2-1 to win the men’s singles, while Polikarpova beat India’s Sri Kreshna Priya Kudaralu 2-1 game to cart home the women’s singles top prize award.
