Lagos teacher, boyfriend arrested for burning daughter’s buttocks (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 22-year-old primary school teacher, Margret Obano, for allegedly brutalising her two-year-old daughter and burning her buttocks.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened on Friday, October 14, 2022, in the Bariga area of the state.
An Instagram platform, Instablog9ja, while speaking to a resident, said the woman lived at her boyfriend’s mother’s house.
The resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “She is fond of maltreating and abusing the child for no reason. On Friday, she beat up the little child and put her bum on an electric cooking hot plate. Read more

The Police have explained why it fired teargas at protesters at the Lekki tollgate in commemoration of the #EndSARS second anniversary.
Lagos police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin explained the protesters were already gathering at the toll gate as opposed to doing a peaceful procession.
The Nation reports police started firing the teargas when the protesters laid some coffins at the tollgate to round off their demonstration.
Those arrested were identified as Ifeanyi, Olamide Raheemi, Samuel Ishola and one unidentified person. They were detained in a police van. Read more
ASUU strike: UNILAG, OAU, UNIBEN, others announce resumption dates (Guardian)
Nigerian university students are expected back in class after the suspension of an eight-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The suspended ASUU strike started on Monday, February 14.
Since suspension of the strike on Friday, October 14, a number of universities have released internal memos and circulars announcing their resumption date.
Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile-Ife in a statement by its Registrar, Margaret Omosule, disclosed that student are to resume on Thursday, October 20 for the continuation of the 2021/2022 session. Read more
Wizkid welcomes second child with Jada Pollock (Vanguard)
Nigerian singer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known as Wizkid and baby mama, manager, Jada Pollock, have welcomed their second child.
The 37 years old enterpreneur made this known on her Instagram handle where she showed a picture of her cradling her first son and new baby, while she captioned it saying, “Beyond a blessing. Thank God for another year.”
Jada Pollock, is well-known in the industry for her entrepreneurial skills. Under her management, Wizkid has established relationships with many prominent international acts, including Drake.
Before immersing herself in talent manager, Jada was a stylist with the renowned brand Gucci.
She had the opportunity of working with Chris Brown and met Wizkid in 2012 at the stars concert in Lagos.
But their relationship did not become public until they had their first son, Zion Ayo Balogun, in 2017. Read more
Amnesty International: More than 40 #EndSARS protesters still languishing in jail (DailyTrust)
Two years after the #EndSARS protests, over 40 protesters are still languishing in prisons, according to Amnesty International.
The human rights said this on the second anniversary of the shooting incident at Lekki tollgate in Lagos.
The tollgate served as a point of convergence for the protesters before they were forcefully dispersed by soldiers.
In its statement, Amnesty said panels set up to investigate police impunity failed to deliver justice to hundreds of victims of police brutality.
It said the vast majority of #EndSARS protesters arrested in October 2020 are still being arbitrarily detained without trial. Read more
Mental Health Day: Origami Society advocates mental health support for all (Vanguard)
A non-governmental organisation, Origami Society Nigeria, has on the occasion of the 2022 World Mental Health Day, advocated the prioritisation of mental health support for all, especially for people living with disabilities.
Members of the organisation recently made this known, in Lagos, during the second edition of their programme tagged ‘Origami in Mental Health’, which was a 2-day summit themed ‘Make mental health a priority for all’.
The theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day was ‘Mental health in an unequal world’. So, the organisation decided to focus on disability inclusion, in line with one of its core values, which is ‘Community Spirit and Inclusion’.
The founder of Origami Society Nigeria and creative director of iFoldedit Origami, Oluwatobi Sodimu, on the first day of the event − which was held virtually − highlighted the mental health aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, unavailability of mental health professionals, and the persistent socio-economic challenges in Nigeria and all over the world. Lagos partners GET to host conference on Biosecurity, One-Health (Independent)
The Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Health is partnering with the Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment (GET) Consortium, to host a three-day conference on One Health and Biosecurity, in Lagos.
The Conference, which is the 8th edition with the theme; “Strengthening Health Security and Mitigating Biological Threats in Africa” will be held at the Civic Centre, Lagos between Wednesday 2nd and Friday 4th November.
Professor Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health while addressing newsmen on the conference said the conference is the fourth in a series of conferences organized by the State Government in partnership with GET, and the eight held around West Africa and the African continent by the consortium to help develop a bio-security road map and increase Africa continent resilience towards building capacity to deal with pathogens of high consequence.
He said hosting the conference in Lagos is significant, stating that the State being a low-line coastal city with high population density and a commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa, is vulnerable to biological threats making it important for the State government to improve its preparedness against biological threats and build appropriate infrastructure manage and mitigate dangerous pathogens of high consequence. Falana seeks inclusion of Army, Air Force, Navy in Lagos Rights Committee (Leadership)
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has called for the inclusion of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Navy in the proposed Lagos State Rights Committee.
The senior advocate of Nigeria stated this at a public hearing organised by House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petition and Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission on a bill to amend the office of the public defender law, 2015 held at the Lagos State Assembly Complex.
Falana pointed out that the constitution of the committee was in line with the Okuwobi Judicial Commission enquiry and resolution of the state governors that each state should establish a human rights commission.
While describing Lagos State as one of the few states that have taken the initiative through the amendment of the 2015 law, he said there was need to include the Army Navy and Air Force due to their involvement in human rights abuses and for quick interrogation when found wanting.
Ilaro Poly SUG denies giving awards to cultists (DailyTrust)
The Students’ Union Government of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, has refuted allegations of giving awards to a group of cultists.
Our correspondent gathered that there has been controversy over an award plaque reportedly presented to the Neo-Black Movement (aka Black Axe) by the students’ union.
The SUG President, Ogunsan Joshua, in a statement made available to our correspondent on Thursday distanced the union from the award and “anything that has to do with it.”
Joshua insisted that the union has a zero tolerance for cultism and as such it would not have given an award to any group associated with cultism. Read more

Lana Del Rey has revealed that devices containing her new music and a book manuscript were stolen from her car a few months ago.
The Video Games singer shared in a video on her private Instagram account on Wednesday that she was worried about “what’s going to be out there” following the theft of her laptop and hard drives.
“A few months ago, I parked my car on Melrose Place and I stepped away for a minute. And the one time I left my backpack inside my car, someone broke all of the windows and took it and inside of it was my computer and my three camcorders and my hard drives,” she stated. “I had to remotely wipe the computer that had my 200-page book for Simon & Schuster – which I didn’t have backed up on a cloud because we do not… And despite that, people are still able this week to remotely access my phone and leak our songs and personal photos.”
The 37-year-old explained that she will have to start over with her book, which she loved with “all of my heart and put a lot of passion into it”, and that the camcorders contained two years’ worth of family videos that were going to be turned into a project. Read more

Ellie Goulding has announced her fifth studio album, ‘Higher Than Heaven’.
The record is due to arrive on February 3, 2023 (pre-order/pre-save here), and follows on from the pop artist’s 2020 album ‘Brightest Blue’.
Speaking about the forthcoming project, Goulding explained: “There was definitely a darkness about [the past two years] that was palpable in the studio, with everyone having gone through it differently.

Ed Sheeran reveals he began writing Bond theme before Billie Eilish replaced him (RTE)
Ed Sheeran has said he was writing a theme for the most recent Bond film No Time To Die before he was replaced by Billie Eilish.
The 31-year-old singer-songwriter claimed he was attached to the project before the exit of Danny Boyle as director.
Boyle cited “creative differences” and was replaced by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the first American to helm a 007 film.

The Fabelmans star Michelle Williams set for performer tribute at 2022 Gotham Awards (Deadline)
Michelle Williams will be honoured with a performer tribute during the 32nd annual Gotham Awards, taking place live and in-person on November 28, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
The bestowing of the tribute will follow the November 11 theatrical release of Williams’ latest film The Fabelmans — a semi-autobiographical drama from director Steven Spielberg, which delves into his upbringing. In the feature written by Spielberg and Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, Williams plays Mitzi Fabelman — a character modeled off of Spielberg’s mother. She stars alongside Paul Dano, Gabriel LaBelle, Seth Rogen, Judd Hirsch and more in the TIFF People’s Choice Award winner, from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, which expands nationwide on November 23.

Dame Judi Dench calls for The Crown to carry disclaimers as she accuses show of ‘sensationalism’ (ITV)
Dame Judi Dench has called for a disclaimer to be added to each episode of The Crown, saying the hit Netflix drama has begun to verge on “crude sensationalism”.
The screen and stage veteran said despite previous statements by the streaming giant that the show is a “fictionalised drama”, there is a risk that “a significant number of viewers” will take its events as historical truth.
She added that “wounding suggestions apparently contained in the new series” will prove “damaging” to the monarchy and cannot go unchallenged.
Dame Judi made the remarks in a letter to The Times, following concerns voiced by former Prime Minister Sir John Major, about the content of The Crown’s highly anticipated fifth series, which will launch on November 9. Read more

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel have celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary.
The Hollywood couple started dating in 2007 and tied the knot in Italy on 19 October 2012. They are parents to sons Silas, seven, and two-year-old Phineas.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Justin shared a slideshow of images depicting him and Jessica posing for the camera.
“10 years ain’t enough! You make me a better husband and father every day! I love you so much you beautiful human! Run it back!” the 41-year-old wrote.
The post included a particularly cute video where they recreate the moment from the 1955 animated Disney movie Lady and the Tramp in which the dogs are depicted eating the same piece of spaghetti. Read more
Russian jet ‘released missile’ near RAF aircraft during patrol over Black Sea (Sky)
A missile was released from a Russian aircraft near an unarmed RAF plane on a routine patrol over the Black Sea, the defence secretary has said.
In a statement updating MPs on the war in Ukraine, Ben Wallace said the incident happened on 29 September and that Russia has acknowledged it took place in international airspace.
The RAF RC-135 aircraft was on routine patrol over the Black Sea when it was “shadowed” by two Russian armed SU-27 fighter jets.
Mr Wallace said that while it is not unusual for aircraft to be shadowed in this way, “during that interaction however, it transpired that one of the SU-27 aircraft released a missile in the vicinity of the RAF Rivet Joint beyond visual range”. Read more

Coco Gauff has become the youngest player since Maria Sharapova in 2005 to qualify for the WTA Finals.
The world number seven sealed her spot in the prestigious season-ending tournament by reaching the third round of the Guadalajara Open.
Gauff is just 18 years old and will also be the youngest American to play at the tournament since Lindsay Davenport 28 years ago.

West Ham United charged with failing to control players against Southampton (BBC)
West Ham have been charged by the Football Association after their players surrounded referee Peter Bankes during Sunday’s draw at Southampton.
The West Ham players were angered by the decision to allow Romain Perraud’s goal in the 1-1 draw.
They felt Bankes blocked Jarrod Bowen’s path as he attempted to beat Perraud to the ball in the 20th minute.
The club have been charged with failing to ensure that its players “conducted themselves in an orderly fashion”. Read more

Emma Hayes’ Chelsea absence is being sorely felt as assistant Paul Green and defender Magdalena Eriksson explained the impact the last week has had on the squad.
Last week, the shock news came out in a personal statement where Hayes revealed to the world that she had undergone an emergency hysterectomy (removal of the womb) in her battle with endometriosis.
Part of her recovery plan from the operation included taking a step back from football temporarily and, while the players have already shown their support for Hayes with tributes against Aston Villa (men’s team) and Everton respectively, Eriksson has sent her own personal message to the manager whom she has won so much under.
“First of all, I’m gutted for Emma. Tyson Fury confirms Dec. 3 Derek Chisora trilogy bout at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (ABC)
Tyson Fury has confirmed he will take on Derek Chisora in their trilogy fight on Dec. 3 at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Fury’s WBC heavyweight title.
On Thursday, Fury tweeted confirmation of the bout, which will be streamed on ESPN+, as the two heavyweights face each other for the first time since 2014.
Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs), the WBC heavyweight champion, said he was retired following a sixth-round TKO victory over Dillian Whyte in April, but reversed course in August with claims he would fight Chisora, a heavyweight gatekeeper, a third time.
“The Gypsy King” then insisted in September he was in serious talks for a Dec. 3 bout with former champion Anthony Joshua that would represent one of the biggest events in all of boxing. Zion Williamson did not disappoint in his NBA return after 17 months out, as the forward powered to 25 points and nine rebounds in the New Orleans Pelicans’ season-opening 130-108 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.
The 2019 draft first pick had not made an appearance since May 4, 2021, after breaking his foot, but was the star of the show as the Pelicans laid down a marker for their season.
Williamson went 11-of-22 from the field and added four steals and three assists in a 30-minute performance full of his trademark aggression mixed with grace.
“Simply playing the game I love that I didn’t get to play for a long time just was a breath of fresh air,” Williamson said after postgame. “There’s a lot of room for improvement. I’m still learning about my teammates. I’m just excited to go.” Read more
Lafferty apologises after being hit with 10-match ban (RTE)
Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty has apologised for any “distress caused” after he was handed a 10-match ban by the Scottish FA following their investigation into his alleged use of sectarian language.
Lafferty had previously received a club fine after a social media video showed the former Rangers and Hearts player reacting when a man posing for a photo with him says “Up the Celts”.
The 35-year-old was accused of not acting in the best interests of football and breaching a rule which forbids the use of insulting language which includes reference to the likes of ethnic origin, race, nationality, religion or belief.
Kilmarnock have confirmed that they have accepted the punishment and said that as well as working with the anti-sectarian charity Nil By Mouth, that Lafferty has committed to assisting their ‘Football for All’ programmes on a weekly basis. Read more
