A 40-year-old man, Nuhu Umar Usman, has reportedly shot dead his second wife, Ladi Nuhu, at Dangarfa village in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmed Wakil, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect had been arrested.

He said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect slept in the same room with his ( the deceased) that night. The suspect had two wives and six children.

“There was an altercation between the wives, to the extent that the eldest son held grudges against the father and threatened to harm him. Prior to that incident, the eldest son threatened the father. Read more 

Hoodlums stab driver, conductor, victims blame LASTMA officials (Punch)

Suspected hoodlums said to be working with some officials of the Lagos State Management Traffic Authority have stabbed a commercial bus driver, Jamiu Alao, in the Costain area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Alao’s bus developed a fault and broke down on the road.

Some LASTMA officials were said to have attempted to tow the bus, a move that was resisted by the driver.

Shortly after, the hoodlums were said to have arrived at the scene and stabbed the victim with a broken bottle in the presence of the officials. Read more 

We’re relying on oppressed masses to win election — Peter Obi (Vanguard)

The spokesperson, of the Obi-Datti campaign organisation, Yinusa Tanko, has disclosed that the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi relied on the oppressed masses across Nigeria to win the presidential election on February 25.

He added that the defection of the party’s governorship candidate in the July 16, 2022 poll in Osun will not in any way affect Obi’s chances in the state.

Speaking ahead of the party’s presidential campaign rally in Osogbo on Saturday, Tanko said Obi stands a better chance of becoming Nigeria’s president ahead of other candidates.

“The defection of Lasun Yusuf from the Labour Party to the Peoples Democratic Party does not affect us in any way, we have our structure over time. Immediately after the defection of Lasun, the party has gone back to galvanize the structure of the party all over the state. Read more 

Electricity workers fault estimated billing system (Guardian)

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) yesterday faulted the estimated billing system in the country.

Secretary General of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Comrade Joe Ajaero who spoke during the public hearing on a bill to amend the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005 argued that the measure was in breach of laid down rules and regulations.

Akaero also faulted the injection of over N3 trillion injected by Federal Government into the privatized electricity companies owned by individuals, without a commensurate increase in power generation over the past 10 years.

Comrade Ajaero who argued that privatisation has further compounded the economic woes maintained that the privatisation policy was designed to fail from the onset.

He maintained that “there has not been meaningful improvement or contribution by the current investors 9 years after privatization and 17 years after the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005 was signed into law.”

While stressing the need to review the entire privatization exercise, the NUEE Scribe said: “Our position on privatization is clear, but we are worried whether the amendments are critically based on the market private public where we belong now. Read more 

NAHCO suspends officials over damage to Air Peace aircraft (Nation)

The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Plc has suspended some senior operations officials and is investigating others over the recent incident involving the damage to one of Air Peace aircraft at the Lagos airport.

The NAHCO equipment was said to have rammed into the aircraft at the airside causing damage to the elevator.

Announcing this in a statement signed by the Group Executive Director, Business and Corporate Services, NAHCO, Dr. Sola Obabori, said the decision to suspend the staff was to enable proper and unhindered investigation.

The management of the company stated that they have invited the relevant regulatory and security agencies to swing into action and especially investigate the subject of sabotage and take an independent look at the incident. Read more 

We are not in court against INEC chairman – DSS (Channels)

The Department of State Services (DSS) has said that it is not in court against the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu.

In a brief communique by its spokesman, Peter Afunanya, the DSS said a recent publication with the headline – “Court Stops DSS from Arresting INEC Chairman”, had its facts skewed.

According to the DSS imagemaker, the Service has pointed out its disapproval to the Editorial authorities of the Newspaper that published the story and a promised agreement was reached to address the concerns raised, however, those concerns are yet to be resolved.

Dr Afunanya stressed that his communique has become important to guide public understanding and perception, especially that the said report is misleading. Read more 

Oyo inaugurates 33 Education Secretaries, warns against abuse of office (Independent)

The Oyo State Government, on Friday inaugurated Education Secretaries across the 33 Local Government areas of the state, warning them not to abuse the privileges of the office.

Inaugurating the secretaries on behalf of the State Governor, in Ibadan, the Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran implored them to improve education quality in their localities and reduce the number of out-of-school children.

He appreciated Governor Seyi Makinde for deeming it fit to appoint the new Education Secretaries across the 33 Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities in the State. Read more

Umahi grants Obi access to Ebonyi stadium for rally (Sun)

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, yesterday approved the request of the state chapter of Labour Party to use the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium in Abakaliki for it’s rally slated to hold on 11 January,2022.

Presidential candidate of the Labour party,  Mr. Peter Obi, and his team are expected in Ebonyi for his presidential rally next week.

To ensure the success of the rally , the Governor instructed the Ministry of Youth and Sports to allow the party to use the stadium for the rally provided they fulfil the necessary requirements as outlined in his executive order.

The Governor gave the instruction while addressing some Commissioners and heads of government agencies and departments at his country home on Thursday.

The public officers were in the Governor’s home with their Staff on a Christmas and New year homage to the Governor.

The Governor emphasized that no Political party should be denied access to government owned facilities for any lawful activity, provided they fulfil the demands of the existing Executive order in the State for the use of such facilities.

“The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, the Labour Party applied that they want to use the stadium on the 11th.

“They must be allowed to use it, but they must comply with my Executive Order.

“No Party should be denied the use of our facilities, but the laws of the State must be obeyed” he said.

Governor Umahi who used the occasion to commend some Ministries for their outstanding performance in 2022, also cautioned those found wanting to buckle up or risk  sanctions. Read more

Grammy-winning recording engineer killed by police SWAT team in Nashville after allegedly holding family hostage (Variety) 

A Grammy-winning recording engineer who has worked in the Nashville music scene for 35 years, Mark Capps, was shot and killed by police in Nashville Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson said he was killed by a SWAT team member after he brandished a gun in his doorway, as police responded to an incident in which Capps had allegedly held his wife and adult stepdaughter captive at gunpoint.

The death sent shock waves through much of the local music community. Capps was part of a family that is well-known in Nashville circles; he was the son of legendary session player, Grand Ole Opry guitarist and Musicians Hall of Fame member Jimmy Capps, who died in 2020. The fatal shooting of Capps comes just two days after his brother died, as indicated on his social media.

Thursday night, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department posted body-camera footage of the shooting. Capps’ actions at the time he was shot are difficult to make out in the video footage, with sunlight reflecting off the home’s glass outer door. A still photo included in the police department’s video shows the gun police say he was holding when he was shot. (The video, as posted by police on YouTube, is embedded below.)

Capps, 54, was wanted on aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping warrants at the time of his death. Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters that Capps brought his 60-year-old wife and 23-year-old stepdaughter into their family room at gunpoint at approximately 3 a.m. and “told them if they called someone, he would kill them. Jackass’ Bam Margera has admitted that he was “pronounced dead” during a recent visit to the hospital.

The former MTV star was hospitalised after he experienced multiple seizures and was discovered to have a blood infection.

He spoke to his old co-star Steve-O on his podcast Steve-O’s Wild Ride!, where the friends discussed their lives and experiences when the conversation turned to Bam’s health scare.

Margera revealed: “I was basically pronounced dead on Elvis’ birthday, December 8th. Did not know that I had, like, gnarly Covid. My body was shutting down and I went into four seizures.” Read more

Tom Hanks has revealed the advice that he gave his son before they acted together in the upcoming movie A Man Called Otto was to “work hard, but you can’t make it look like you’re working hard”.

The Hollywood actor, 66, stars in the title role of the new comedy while his son Truman plays a younger version of the character.

It follows Otto, a grumpy widower who has given up on life following the death of his wife, whose world gets turned around after a young family moves in nearby.

Billie Eilish’s home swarmed by police after man jumped fence and tried to break in (Express)

A man was arrested after reportedly trying to break into 21-year-old Billie Eilish’s childhood home in Los Angeles on Thursday night. Los Angeles police say officers arrived at the house at around 9.15pm after a report of a man in dark clothing jumping over a fence.

ABC reports that it is unclear whether any belongings were taken or if anyone was home at the time.

Footage from the news outlet showed police in the home looking for evidence.

No injuries were reported but police indicated that they had taken the suspect into custody. Read more

Miley Cyrus has named her new album “Endless Summer Vacation” and revealed the new record will drop on March 10.

The pop star’s new record will be her first since 2020’s “Plastic Hearts” and is preceded by the first single “Flowers” which is out on January 13 with Miley confirming the new album’s title in a post across her social media pages.

The post revealed the album’s name and release date and was shared alongside a picture of the star wearing a swimsuit and high heels as she hangs from a trapeze.

Ukraine war: Kyiv and Moscow blame each other as Putin’s truce falters (BBC)

A unilateral ceasefire called by Russia appears to have had little effect on fighting on the ground, with officials accusing each other of opening fire on several areas.

A Ukrainian rescue worker was killed in a Russian strike, while Russian state TV said the city of Donetsk was hit.

Russia ordered a 36-hour unilateral ceasefire, to coincide with the Orthodox Christmas.

Ukraine rejected it saying Moscow might use it to reinforce troops. Read more

Novak Djokovic battled back from 5-2 down in the first set to beat Quentin Halys 7-6(3) 7-6(5) and move into the Adelaide International 1 quarterfinals on Thursday.

Halys, ranked 64th in the world, has never beaten a top-10 opponent but gave Djokovic a big scare before the former world No 1 prevailed in two tiebreakers.

Djokovic, who has now won 31 consecutive singles matches in Australia, is preparing for the January 16-29 Australian Open, where he is seeking a record-extending 10th crown.

The Serb was unable to defend his title last year after he was deported on the eve of the tournament for not being vaccinated against Covid-19.

Rights holder warns IMC against defying court order (Punch)

Total Promotions, holders of the title rights of the Nigeria Professional Football League, have again sounded a note of warning to the Interim Management Committee over its involvement with new investors, which according to them, amounts to a breach of contract.

In a personal note to the Head of Operations of the IMC, Davison Owumi, which was sighted by our correspondent, the Chairman of Total Promotions, Niyi Alonge, recalled how the title rights were awarded to his company in 2012 and rebuked the IMC for continually disregarding court orders ahead of the start of the new season.

“In line with the Procurement Act, you as chairman of the NPFL at the time advertised in the  newspapers inviting interested parties to bid for the Premier Leagues title rights, unlike the partner and not sponsor who you brought now and foisted on the public with total disregard for corporate decency procurement procedures that demand a prior public open tender and bidding. Bayern’s Mazraoui had COVID-19 at World Cup, now out with swelling around heart (ESPN)

Bayern Munich said Friday that full-back Noussair Mazraoui tested positive for the coronavirus during Morocco’s historic run to the semifinals of the World Cup and has since been found to have swelling around his heart.

Bayern left Mazraoui out of the squad that left on Friday for a winter training camp in Qatar ahead of the Bundesliga season resuming on Jan. 20, citing the inflammation.

The club said Mazraoui tested positive for COVID-19 while at the World Cup in early December and that was the reason he didn’t play in Morocco’s quarterfinal win over Portugal.

His absence was widely attributed to an unspecified illness at the time. Read more 

Arsenal sign Netherlands’ Victoria Pelova from Ajax (Guardian)

Arsenal have signed the Netherlands midfielder Victoria Pelova from Ajax. The 23-year-old has been described by her new manager, Jonas Eidevall, as “one of the most exciting young players in the game” and takes the place in the squad of Jordan Nobbs, who has joined Aston Villa.

Pelova has 31 caps and was a member of the Netherlands squad that reached the final of the 2019 Women’s World Cup. She was also selected for the Tokyo Olympics and for last year’s European Championship.

Pelova joined Ajax from ADO Den Haag in 2019 and left after scoring 11 goals in 66 appearances. Her debut could come in next Sunday’s home game against the WSL leaders, Chelsea. Arsenal are three points behind in second place with a game in hand.

Christian Horner claims Red Bull “selective” after rivals slam decision (Express)

Christian Horner has claimed Red Bull are “selective” about partnering with other companies as he opens up on a breakdown of talks with Porsche. Red Bull looked set to join forces with the iconic German manufacturer for 2026 but negotiations came to a close.

Instead, Red Bull have decided to design their own power units when the new rules package is introduced. Speaking to RacingNews365, he said: “We’re always going to be selective about the partners that we’re going to want to work with.

“I think that there’s a commitment from the group with the engine up to 2030. We’ve made that commitment, and anybody that we work with will need to be there on merit and because it’s the right fit, both technically and commercially.” However, there are fears Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT) could be considered a new manufacturer and handed a range of benefits.
