National security: IGP Egbetokun to summon DIGs, CPs, commanders on Monday (Channels)
To effectively secure the country this yuletide season, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, will meet with Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs), Assistant Inspectors General of Police, Commissioners of Police (CPs), and other top commanders in the Force.
The meeting which will be held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday was announced in a statement on Sunday by the Force spokesman, Ademuyiwa Adejobi.
Egbetokun is expected to roll out the achievements of the police within the last 10 weeks. Read more
Nigerian appointed 1st black female commissioner in Chicago (DailyTrust)
Dr Olusimbo Ige, a Nigerian, has been appointed as the Commissioner, Chicago Department of Public Health, thus becoming the first black female to occupy such a position.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), disclosed this in a congratulatory message to her.
In the congratulatory statement, Dabiri-Erewa described Ige’s milestone as “extraordinary”, saying: “History made! Congrats to the first black woman in the History of Chicago Dept. of Public Health to be appointed as Commissioner.” Read more
Apapa Traffic: NPA bursts syndicate faking E-call Up at Lagos Ports (Leadership)
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), on Sunday, bursts a syndicate sabotaging the E-call up system, also known as ‘Eto’ with 413 fake number plates.
The E-call up system was introduced by NPA in February 2021 for trucks at the Lagos Ports, to end the gridlock witnessed on the port roads. The e-call up system was launched alongside an app called Eto, which truckers are expected to use to book turns to enter the Ports.
In a press statement made available to LEADERSHIP, the Authority said it intercepted a syndicate at the MPS pre-gate in Apapa, where fake e-call up system tickets were generated, thereby sabotaging the ‘Eto call-up’ system. Read more
Ogun Monarch installs El-Rufai as Gbobaniyi of Ijebu Land (ThisDay)
A former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, was yesterday installed as the Gbobaniyi of Ijebuland by the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
El-Rufai is said to be the first Nigerian outside the South-west to receive a chieftaincy title from the Awujale of Ijebuland in his nearly 64-year reign.
Expressing his delight on the installation, the former governor tweeted on his X handle late Friday, “I am pleased to announce that on Saturday, the 16th of December 2023, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Paramount Ruler and Awujale of Ijebuland will honour my brother and confidante Otunba Jimi Lawal with two chieftaincy titles for his contributions to the Ijebu Kingdom and Nigeria, along with his wife Maryam Lawal. Edo 2024: LP repositions to clinch governorship seat (Vanguard)
The Labour Party (LP) on Sunday said it was being repositioned to clinch the governorship seat in the Edo 2024 election.
Mr Obiora Ifoh, National Publicity Secretary of the party, made this known in a statement in Abuja.
According to Ifoh, the party in Edo commenced a capacity building programme for wards and local government executives to strengthen and reposition the party for victory. Read more

Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has vowed a thorough investigation into the recent fire outbreak caused by some miscreants at Gwale Local Government Area Secretariat which resulted in loss of property worth millions of naira.
Gwarzo, who doubles as the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, made the pledge during a visit to the affected site on Saturday evening.
He assured the public that the government would leave no stone unturned in determining the cause and bringing those responsible to justice.
“We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident and the losses incurred. We will work tirelessly to investigate the motive behind the ungodly act and ensure that anyone involved faces the full wrath of the law,” Gwarzo stated. Read more
MDCN inducts 81 doctors from Bingham varsity (Sun)
81 new medical doctors produced by Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, were added into the number of medical doctors practicing in Nigeria.
With the induction, the College of Medicine, Bingham University, said it has so far produced over 500 medical doctors.
A statement from Daburi Misal, Director of Public Affairs of the university, indicated that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) administered the necessary oaths to the new doctors to certify them fit and qualified to practice. Read more
Plateau kick-starts plan to develop Film Village in Jos (Vanguard)
Efforts to add zest to the entertainment industry in Nigeria have received a boost as the Plateau State Government is set to commence the building of a National Film Village, to serve as a creative incubator for emerging talents in the industry within the State, Nigeria and beyond.
The facility is expected to be equipped with state-of-the-art music and movie studios, to among other things, provide a platform for scaling up and showcasing the talents of Nigerian youths on the global stage.
The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Joshua Laven who went on an inspection of the project sites at Kuru and Mararaba Jama’a communities in the Jos South LGA said, the State has also concluded arrangements for the construction of Smart City Housing Units for low, middle and high-income earners for sustainable housing developments in the State. 61 migrants drown in shipwreck off Libya (RFI)
Sixty-one migrants, including women and children, drowned following a shipwreck off Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya said.
IOM, in a post on social media platform X, quoted survivors as saying the boat, carrying around 86 people, departed the Libyan city of Zwara, about 110 km (68 miles) from the capital, Tripoli.
“The central Mediterranean continues to be one of the world’s most dangerous migration routes,” IOM said. Read more

Vatican court convicts Cardinal Becciu, sentences him to 5 years in jail for embezzlement (CNA)
Judges delivered verdicts in the Vatican’s financial corruption trial on Saturday sentencing Cardinal Angelo Becciu to more than five years in prison and convicting five other defendants to similar jail sentences for financial crimes.
Becciu, the pope’s former chief of staff, is the highest-ranking Vatican official ever to face a trial in the Vatican’s criminal court. The 75-year-old Italian cardinal was found guilty of several counts of embezzlement.
The cardinal was sentenced to five and half years in prison, a permanent disqualification from holding public office, and a fine equal to more than $8,000. Read more
Stanley Tucci confirmed for new TV travel series (DigitalSpy)
Stanley Tucci will be taking to the road for a new travel series.
The ten-part documentary series, titled Tucci — The Heart of Italy, will see the actor explore Italian cuisine and culture across ten different regions, according to Variety.
As part of a production deal with Disney’s National Geographic, the series will be produced by BBC Studios and Specialist Factual Productions, as well as Tucci’s production company, Salt Productions. Production is expected to begin in January 2024. Read more

AFCON: CAF receives 5,000+ media applications from 70 countries (Leadership)
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has disclosed an overwhelming response of over 5,000 media accreditation applications for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations. This notable figure represents a staggering 90 per cent increase compared to the applications received for the Cameroon event in 2021.
According to the official CAF website, the media accreditation application process closed on November 24. Impressively, the applications have come from more than 70 different nationalities, reflecting a robust global interest in Africa’s most significant sporting event.
Due to the immense demand for accreditations, CAF has initiated a quota system for all countries to ensure fair access. The organisation reiterated its commitment to fairness in the allocation and implementation of quotas while emphasising its dedication to promoting media freedom and access. Read more
