Navy intercepts 10,000kg cannabis in Lagos (Guardian)

The Nigerian Navy (NN), on Tuesday, said it recovered over 200 bags of cannabis weighing 10,000 kilogrammes (kg) in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

According to the NN, the interception was made possible through utilisation of Falcon Eye, a state-of-the-art maritime awareness domain facility technology.

Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft, Kolawole Oguntuga, who disclosed this to newsmen during a media conference in Apapa, said the interception took place on July 3, 2023. He said: “On this day, the Falcon Eye was able to detect the activity of criminals transferring bags of cannabis from boats to land. Read more

IPOB: Lagos Eze Ndigbo trial continues today over alleged terrorism (Guardian)

The trial of the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, Lagos, Frederick Nwajagu, before a Lagos High Court, sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos Island, was on Tuesday, fixed for today following the absence of the defence counsel.

Lagos State Government had on May 9, 2023, arraigned Nwajagu before Justice Yetunde Adesanya on a nine-count charge bordering on attempted acts of terrorism, participating in terrorism and support of a proscribed entity.

The prosecution said his offence contravened the provisions of Section 403(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 and Section 12(a) (c), 18, 21 and 29 of the Terrorism (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022. Read more

Lagos man jailed 14 years for attempted robbery (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court sitting in the Tafawa Balewa Square area of the state, on Tuesday, sentenced a man, Temitope Olowo, to 14 years imprisonment for attempted robbery in the state.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya handed down the verdict to the convict, who was sentenced on one count amended charge of attempted robbery after a plea bargain application was made.

Olowo was first arraigned on November 9, 2018, on three-count bordering on arm robbery but he pleaded not guilty. Read more

Lagos bizman sends widow’s nude photos to church WhatsApp group (Punch)

A Lagos-based businessman, Amarah Kennedy, has continued to circulate the nude photos of two single mothers whom he previously had relationships with.

PUNCH Metro learnt that he sent the photos to the WhatsApp platform of the church of one of the women identified simply as Kester.

He also sent the photos to her late husband’s family members and office.

Automobile painter absconds with customers car in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a man, Godwin Bassey, for allegedly stealing a Toyota Corolla car worth N5m, belonging to one Amuta Friday, in the Ejigbo area of the state.

The 27-year-old mechanic was arraigned on two counts of stealing before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka, who held a brief for Magistrate Balogun at a Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Yaba area of the state.

The prosecutor, Chekwube Okeh, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in March 2023, in the Ejigbo area of the state. Read more

Lagos man in court for N5m iron rods fraud (Punch)

A 42-year-old man, Okwudili Orji, was arraigned on Monday for allegedly stealing iron rods worth N5m in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State.

Orji was arraigned on two counts bordering on stealing before Chief Magistrate Patrick Nwaka at the Yaba Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecutor, Cyril Ejiofor, told the court that the offences Orji committed contravened Sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Suspect arraigned for swindling Lagos man of N9m (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command, on Monday, arraigned a man, Nnanna Nwancho, for allegedly stealing N9m from one Emeka Ifekume.

The 22-year-old defendant was arraigned on three counts bordering on stealing before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka, who held a brief for Magistrate Balogun before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Yaba area of the state.

The defendant was said to have obtained N9m from Ifekume under the pretence of selling a Toyota Prado Jeep to him and stopped answering his phone after the money was paid into his account. Read more

Lagos court acquits woman charged with assault on police (Punch)

A 33-year-old woman, Olufumilayo Eriolowa, who was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly assaulting a police officer, Olufowobi Nureni, at the Ogombo area of Lagos State, has been freed of all the charges.

Eriolowa, who had been remanded in custody since May 17, 2023, was freed by Magistrate M. O. Alao of the Magistrates’ Court in Eti-Osa, Lagos after the case was struck out.

The PUNCH had reported that the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a post on Twitter, revealed that she was remanded for allegedly assaulting a policeman in the state. Read more

Man arraigned for stealing Yabatech students’ phones (Punch)

A 30-year-old man, Babatunde Olayinka, was on Monday arraigned by the police before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing phones valued at N680,000, belonging to two students of the Yaba College of Technology.

Olayinka was arraigned before Magistrate O. Y Adefope on two counts bordering on stealing.

The prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, told the court that the defendant committed the offence around 2pm on June 7, 2023, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex. Read more

Woman arraigned in Lagos court for defamation (Punch)

A 30-year-old woman, Sunshine Edafe, was on Tuesday, arraigned by the police before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State, for allegedly posting defamatory messages on social media against one Pascal Offiah.

The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun on three counts bordering on intent to defraud, a threat to life and property and defamation.

The defendant was said to have asked Offiah to buy her a house and a Sport Utility Vehicle, and when he refused, she decided to circulate a threatening and defamatory publication about him on social media. Read more

Hoodlums steal N1.3m goods from Lagos bizwoman’s shop (Punch)

A businesswoman, Linda Ekwulomu, has been traumatised after burglars looted her goods after breaking into her shop at Cele Bus Stop, along the Apapa Oshodi Expressway in Lagos State.

The businesswoman, while lamenting over the development, said she lost goods worth N3m to the burglars, adding that this was the third time burglars would break into her shop and cart away her goods.

Speaking with our correspondent, Ekwulomu said goods including iPhones, computers, and other products were stolen from her shop, adding that louts in the area where her shop is located were responsible for her ordeal. Read more

Police begin probe as gunmen kill rating in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has said an investigation had commenced to track down the killers of a naval rating in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the rating, who until his death was serving at the Lagos Logistics Depot of the Navy, was shot dead by gunmen in the community.

The rating was said to be alone when the suspects perpetrated the crime.

NDLEA arrests 2 Ghanaians, 11 others for drug trafficking (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, on Sunday, confirmed the arrest of two Ghanaians, Monday Saba and Hakeem Kwana, and 11 other suspects for drug-related offences in different parts of the country.

The agency’s Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed the development, said officials of the agency intercepted two imported consignments of a strong strain of cannabis known as loud, with a combined weight of 5,344.1 kilograms along the in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

He also revealed that based on credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives ambushed a white truck conveying 50 jumbo bags of the illicit substance weighing 2, 434.1kg along the Epe-Lekki Expressway in the early hours of Monday, June 19. Read more
