Lagos police task citizens on security as church donates gadgets (Guardian)

The Lagos State Police Command has urged citizens to be security-conscious and report any suspicious movement or actions capable of threatening the safety of residents.

Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Ahmed Kontagora, stated this during the presentation of security equipment to 10 police formations by the Lagos Province 44 of the Redeemed Christian Church of God at Area C Command Headquarters in Surulere at the weekend.

Commending the RCCG for the gesture, he said the equipment, which comprised crowd control gadgets, walkie-talkie, body camera and other devices, would assist the police to effectively check crime and arrest security breaches in the state. Read more

Motorcyclists defy ultimatums, take over Obalende-Ikoyi axis (Guardian)

Despite several ultimatums by the Lagos State government to Okada riders to leave Lagos roads, the motorcyclists have refused to quit major roads in the state.

Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had, in May, said those who had taken up Okada riding for lack of jobs should take opportunities in agriculture, wealth creation, poverty alleviation and other government programmes.

Sanwo-Olu added that the strings of lawlessness witnessed in confrontation between commercial motorcyclists and law enforcement agencies required urgent actions, including prohibition.

But the number of Okada riders on Lagos roads, despite arrests, has increased. The riders have increased in number around Obalende and have taken over the Obalende-Ikoyi link bridge, causing traffic jam as drivers struggle to avoid hitting them. Read more

Policemen, thugs, forcefully eject Ikeja residents (Vanguard)

Blood bath was narrowly averted, early this morning, when land speculators in company of thugs and armed policemen invaded Kudeti street in the highbrow Adeniyi Jones, Ikeja, Lagos, forcefully ejecting residents of the area.

The thugs who were wielding dangerous weapons and equipped with painting materials were going from house to house armed with a court order and forcing people out of their respective homes with their property in the full glare of gun- toting policemen numbering about 30. 

Eyewitness account said the infuriated residents and landlords trooped out enmasse and confronted the Invaders alleging  that they were flaunting fake court judgement with a view to forcefully dispossess their hard- earned properties from them.

One of the residents who identified himself as a customs officer said he had been living in the estate for over twenty years. He recalled that in 1986, the same people invaded the estate with same fake court judgement and embarked on massive destruction of properties including forcing residents out of their homes. Lagos commuters stranded as drivers protest alleged ‘extortion’ (Nation)

Commuters along Ikorodu road on Monday were stranded as commercial drivers parked their buses along the Onipanu/Palm groove axis over alleged extortion by men of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Several commuters heading to Jibowu, Maryland, Ikeja, axis had to trek long distances in the early hours of Monday.

The Nation gathered the bus drivers withdrew their buses, forcing commuters to resort to trekking while recalcitrant drivers were prevented from operating by transport union members.

A Commercial bus (Danfo) driver, who spoke with The Nation under anonymity, said they were protesting daily seizure of their buses and extortion by officials of Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) and LASTMA over frivolous traffic rules violation. Read more

Court freezes suspended Abiodun’s aide’s bank accounts, seizes Lekki home (Nation)

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Tuesday ordered the interim forfeiture of the funds and properties traced to Mr Abidemi Ganiyu Rufai, the suspended aide of the Ogun Governor facing wire fraud charges in the United States.

The order covers Rufai’s property located at House 11. Omodayo Awotuga Street, Bera Estate, Chevy View, Lekki, Lagos and funds in his accounts with two new generation banks.

Justice Tijjani Ringim made the order sequel to an ex parte motion filed and argued by a counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) Ebuka Okongwu.

The EFCC joined Rufai and his firm Omo Mayodele Global Investment as 1st and 3rd respondents in the suit. Read more

Lagos nabs 24 suspects, seals property over wetland reclamation (Vanguard)

Lagos State Government has arrested 24 suspects over-involvement in the reclamation of a wetland at Mosafejo Mowo in Badagry.

It also sealed the premises of a private developer company (name withheld) that was constructing on the wetland.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. tunji Bello, said the suspects were arrested on Monday during an operation by security agents and officials from the Department of Conservation and Ecology, following the non-compliance of the company with several “Stop-Work” notices served on them.

Bello stated: “Officials of the ministry observed the series of encroachment during routine monitorings of wetland in the State and on March 1, 2021, a stop-work order was served on the company followed by renewal on two different occasions. Read more

Lagos transport worker dies during fight over N500 bet (Punch)

A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Rasheed Yinusa, has lost his life during a brawl with a lotto agent, Abdulazeez Olasupo, around the Benson area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Yinusa, aka Apase, visited the lotto agent’s shop and placed a bet of N500.

A resident, who gave his name only as Segun, told our correspondent that things took a different turn when Olasupo, after printing the bet, requested payment.

Clergyman docked after absconding with N870,000 meant for “spiritual oil” (DailyTrust)

A-70- year-old clergyman has landed in court after collecting N870,000 to buy “spiritual oil” for washing and cleaning dollar notes.

Emmanuel Bello, who resides in Idimu, appeared before an Ikeja magistrate’s court in Lagos to face three counts of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.

Prosecutors told the court Bello fraudulently obtained the money from Mrs Bilikisu Olabisi, with a promise to supply “spiritual oil “ for the washing and cleaning of dollar notes.

The defendant and others, at large, committed the offence on March 2 at Council area of Idimu, Lagos State, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Mojirade Edeme, told the court. Read more
