The Ogun State Police Command said it would commence the prosecution of motorists driving against traffic on major roads in the state, especially the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The command said it was worried about recent accidents on highways in Ogun.
SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), stated this in a statement in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
Oyeyemi stated that the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, had directed Divisional Police Officers (DPOs). Area Commanders and traffic officers across the state to go all out for recalcitrant drivers.
“Those who are in the habit of driving against traffic, otherwise known as one- way drive, should be arrested and dealt with in the most decisive manner,” he said.
According to the statement, henceforth, anybody caught driving against traffic will have his/her vehicle impounded and such driver will be diligently prosecuted.
Oyeyemi warned the general public to desist from driving against traffic anywhere in the state, saying anyone caught in such act would have him/herself to blame, no matter how highly placed.
“The Ogun State Police Command has observed with dismay the rate at which motorists and motorcyclists are driving against traffic whenever there is little traffic jam in any of our highways.
“This indiscipline and barbaric attitude has led to many avoidable road traffic accidents and the resultant loss of innocent lives.
“The most recent one is the accident that happened in Obada Oko area of Abeokuta, where a tipper moving against traffic, crushed three innocent people in a taxi.
“Also, the attitude of those reckless drivers is making things difficult on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, where construction work is currently going on.” (NAN)
