A commuter who discovered that two ferry crossings and three bike rides were quicker than using the train has taken his bizarre route to work for the last time before retiring.
Maths lecturer Dr. Michael McCabe lives in the New Forest and worked at the University of Portsmouth.
There was a train journey available, which was meant to take 90 minutes.
But because of delays and cancellations, it could take up to four hours.
Fed-up with the “absolutely appalling” situation, Dr McCabe decided to cycle to Lymington, catch a ferry to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, cycle 20 miles to Fishbourne, take another ferry to Portsmouth and cycle again to the university.
Although he subsequently dropped the complex route to enable him to train for marathon running, he did it one more time to mark his retirement, and to raise money for charity Brain Tumour Research.
