Govt imposes curfew as tension builds up in Kaduna (Punch)
The Kaduna State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the state capital and its environs to forestall a breakdown of law and order. Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Samuel Aruwan, said the curfew was with immediate effect. “A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Kaduna town and environs. Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi, is dead, aged 78. Kutigi, who served as CJN between January 30, 2007 and December 30, 2009, reportedly died in a London hospital on Saturday after a brief illness. Justice Kutigi was born on December 31, 1939, in Kutigi, North-Western State (which is now located in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State). Read more

Egyptian police on Sunday arrested economist Abdel Khalek Farouk after the publication of his book critically analysing the country’s economic and social crises, a lawyer said. Saudis now say journalist was murdered (BBC)
Saudi Arabia says that journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered, blaming a “rogue operation” for a killing that has sparked an international outcry. Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told Fox News the act was a “tremendous mistake” and denied the influential crown prince ordered the killing. Saudi Arabia has been under pressure to explain what happened, having first said Mr Khashoggi was alive. Read more

Eight-time Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt has been offered a professional football contract by Australian side Central Coast Mariners, says his agent Ricky Simms. The 32-year-old Jamaican, who retired from athletics in 2017, has been on trial with the A-League club. “I can confirm Usain has been offered a contract by Central Coast Mariners,” said Simms. Suspected lunatic hacks policeman, septuagenarian to death (Punch)
The Ondo State Police Command on Sunday said it had arrested a suspected lunatic, popularly called At all at all, in Tekunle village, in the Ondo East Local Government Area of Ondo State, for killing two people with a machete in the Ayeyemi area of the state. The two people killed by the lunatic were a policeman and a 75-year-old man, identified as Mr Olusegun Oyadele. The identity of the deceased policeman had yet to be revealed as of the time of filing this report. Read more
Peacemaker stabbed to death during argument over beer (Punch)
A peacemaker, identified simply as Christian, has been stabbed to death in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, while trying to settle a quarrel over N200 bottle of beer between a beer parlour operator, Temitope Adedayo, and a customer, Taiwo Olatokunbo. Twenty-three-year-old Olatokunbo allegedly stabbed Christian to death during the quarrel. The suspect was said to have been arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command. Read more
Mechanic accused of stealing gearbox, N150,000 (Punch)
An auto mechanic, Nnana Uzor, has been arrested by the police for allegedly collecting money under false pretences for the repair of the gearbox of a Ford Ranger, 2012 model. The suspect was also accused of stealing part of the gearbox which belonged to one Nosa James, the owner of the Ford vehicle. Read more
