President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joseph Ajaero, has expressed gratitude to God for saving the lives of his family members following a fire outbreak at his Lagos home last week.
The Guardian learnt that the entire building was razed to the ground without anything salvaged. The mystery fire, according to sources, started from the roof with a strange noise that family members said they initially took for foraging domestic animals.

Lagos warns against malpractices in basic education exam (Punch)
The 2023 Lagos State Basic Education Certificate Examination will commence on Monday, July 3, in all schools in Lagos State, with the government warning against all forms of malpractices.
The Director, Lagos State Examinations Board, Mr Adebayo Orunsolu, in a statement on Wednesday, said the examination would be held from Monday, July 3 to Saturday, July 8, 2023, at all schools’ centres across the state.
Orunsolu urged Principals of all public and approved private Junior Secondary Schools in the state to adhere strictly to the guidelines for the conduct of the examination. Read more

Students pay fines of 6 inmates at Suleja Custodial Centre (DailyTrust)
Six inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre Suleja have regained their freedom after six students of Jewels Leading Light Academy, Abuja paid their fines.
The six students – Dave Falade, Otse Unogwu, Ife Atilola, Zachary Abu, Ugomsinachi Okoronkwo and Nathan Oyinlola – all in JSS 2, football fans and friends decided on the humanitarian intervention under “The Duke of Edinburgh Project” initiative.
The students paid a visit to the custodial facility on Tuesday and paid the sum of N120,000 as bail to effect the release of the six inmates. Read more

Madonna’s upcoming Celebration tour has been postponed after the singer was hospitalized with a “serious bacterial infection”, according to an Instagram post from her longtime manager Guy Oseary. The tour was scheduled to kick off in Vancouver on 15 July.
“On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several-day stay in the ICU,” he wrote. “Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.
“At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.
“We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.” Read more

James Blake has announced his new album ‘‘Playing Robots Into Heaven’’ and shared its lead single ‘‘Big Hammer’’.
‘Playing Robots In Heaven’ is set for release on September 8 via Polydor/ Republic. The album will see Blake return to his electronic roots seen within his earlier works, such as 2013’s ‘‘Overgrown’’ and 2010’s ‘‘Klavierwerke’’.
Blake also released its first single ‘‘Big Hammer’’ from the LP. Directed by Oscar Hudson (Radiohead, Bonobo), the accompanying video is shot largely from the perspective of a car that is being driven by a gang of troublemakers dressed in all-white tracksuits. Read more

A shooting outside the United States Consulate in the port city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has left two people dead — a Nepalese security guard and the gunman who initially opened fire.
Officials in the US and Saudi Arabia confirmed the incident on Wednesday as investigations continue into the attack.

Former Nigerian boxer, Jerry Okorodudu, passes on (ThisDay)
One of Nigeria’s former flamboyant boxers, Jerry Okorodudu, 64, died yesterday in Lagos.
The former boxer turned coach died while awaiting surgery to amputate his left leg made gangrene by foot ulcer. He battled diabetes and high blood pressure for years with little support coming his way from the authorities he served with in his youth.
His widow, Mrs Adenike Okorodudu confirmed the death of the former boxer fondly called ‘‘Urhobo Loud Mouth’’ at the prime of his career. Read more

The Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced the appointment of Martino — a coach who previously worked with Messi at the club and national team levels — on Wednesday, saying he will begin his tenure “upon the receipt of his work documentation”.

Maddison had a medical yesterday and is expected to become the first major signing for new Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou. Tottenham stepped up their interest this week and after 48 hours of intense negotiations have struck a deal with relegated Leicester for the England international.
It is understood the fee will be £40m with the promise of further instalments on appearances and achievements. Leicester had been initially seeking £60m (€69.5m) for Maddison, who had one year left on his contract, but softened their stance as they did not want a transfer saga damaging their preparations for the Championship season under new manager Enzo Maresca. In his first public comments since the PGA Tour’s stunning alliance with the DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund was announced June 6, six-time major champion Phil Mickelson said he’s happy the sides are working to bring the fractured sport back together.
During a news conference Wednesday ahead of this week’s LIV Golf League tournament in Spain, Mickelson told reporters that he thinks the plan to reshape the sport is ahead of schedule.
“I would say I felt appreciation that we got to this point where we’re working together because it makes me confident with where the game of golf is headed in the future,” Mickelson said. “We felt like it was going to be about two years roughly before we got to that point.
