Lagos may tax churches, mosques (SUN)
The Lagos State Government has said there is a likelihood of religious institutions engaging in business transactions to pay taxes. Commissioner for Home Affairs, Abdulateef Abdulhakeem, in a statement, on Tuesday, said though religious institutions were exempted according to the state laws, but any religious body which engages in commercial activities is liable to pay tax. “Religious institutions are not taxable under the Lagos laws but where religious institutions engage in business transactions like schools and so on, then such are liable to pay taxes but as far as the institution is concerned, it is exempted from paying tax. LASG moves against sexual harassment in workplaces (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has inaugurated an anti-sexual harassment programme in its effort to fight sexual harassment in workplaces. The programme, ‘Lagos Says No to Sexual Harassment in the Workplace’ was inauguraed under the aegis of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team. In a statement on Tuesday, the Coordinator of the DSVRT, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said some multinational companies were trained in issues, including sexual harassment and the steps to take. Vivour-Adeniyi noted that sexual harassment was a crime and the state government reserved the right to intervene, adding that the companies were encouraged to put structures in place for reporting such cases. Ambode seeks patronage of made-in-Nigeria (Nation)
The Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has advised Nigerians to patronise goods made in the country to create more jobs and develop the economy. Speaking during the inauguration of the furniture factory, “The Home and You” built by Mrs. Feyisola Abiru, in Ikorodu, Ambode said the factory would produce industrial made-in-Nigeria furniture that can compete globally for both corporate and home use within and outside the country. He said it is only through this means that the local economy could be developed.Represented by Rotimi Ogunleye and Mrs. Olayinka Oladunayo, commissioners for Physical Planning and Commerce & Industry respectively, the governor commended Mrs Abiru for citing the factory at Ibeshe, a suburb of Ikorodu. Lingering traffic chaos from lagos ports: Ambode’s case for revival of other ports (Vanguard)
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, recently added his voice to the call for ailing ports in other parts of the country to be revived to enable them take some of the load off Lagos which is presently choking on account of unabating traffic gridlock caused by tankers heading to or leaving the ports at Apapa. According to him: “As it is now, other ports in Nigeria must begin to work immediately to decongest gridlock in Lagos”. Indeed, Apapa is home to the nation’s busiest seaports, hence the traffic snarl on virtually all the roads leading into and out of the town. It is commonplace to find heavy-duty trailers and articulated vans stuck on the highway for several hours, thereby impeding the free flow of traffic in that axis. Read more
Lagos trains 5,000 Students on ready set work programme (ThisDay)
About 5,000 students are undergoing a 13-weeks intensive training of the Ready Set Work programme organised by the Lagos State Government to prepare students for the world of work. Participants were drawn from institutions within the state and spread across three designated centers: The Lagos State University (LASU) , Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) and The University of Lagos(UNILAG), Yaba College of Technology, Caleb University,Imota The programme which is the third edition also had 20,000 students in their penultimate classes training online. PenCom verifies FG MDAs employees in Lagos, Ogun (Vanguard)
The National Pension Commission, PenCom, has commenced a verification and enrolment exercise for employees of Federal Government, FG, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, in Ogun and Lagos States that are Treasury-Funded. The Exercise meant for employees in the service of the Federal Government due to retire between January and December, 2019 by virtue of attaining 60 years of age or 35 years in service whichever is earlier or 65 years in service or 70 years of age for employees of tertiary institutions is for the purpose of payment of retirement benefits. A statement by Peter Aghahowa, PenCom’s Head of Corporate Communications, said the physical enrolment also covered those already retired but yet to be enrolled. Read more
Bode George seeks Yoruba unity (Nation)
A former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has urged the Yoruba to shun selfish interests and unite to place the Southwest in the enviable position it deserves. The politician spoke yesterday at the grand zonal congress of Southwest Youth and Women Leaders in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. He noted that the Yoruba can no longer go in different directions. In an address, titled: “Truth, Sacrifice, Excellence and the Pathway to the Future,” George said: “Our founding fathers were largely steered by the greater good of the Yoruba nation. Read more
Soludo delivers Ndigbo Lagos Foundation maiden lecture (Vanguard)
Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Dr. Chukwuma Soludo will deliver the maiden lecture of the Ndigbo Lagos Foundation, today in Lagos. The maiden edition of the lecture will take place at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, in Lagos. LASACO Assurance Plc has introduced a speedy and more responsive claim settlement solution that will make policyholders get compensation under their motor insurance policies faster.According to a statement by the firm, this is a strategy of boosting its customer satisfaction drive. PMS dominates cargo arrivals at Lagos ports (Vanguard)
A total of 12 vessels out of the 29 arriving at the Pilotage District of the Lagos ports yesterday are laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol. According to highlights of the Shipping Position obtained from the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, the vessels freighting these liquid cargoes include Challenge Passage, British Saefarer, Horizon Theano and Gold Paint whose agent is West Atlantic. The four vessels sailed in with 35,000 metric tons, mt; 34,000mt, 37,000mt and 37,500mt of PMS respectively. Read more
Air Peace set to launch Lagos-Monrovia, Abuja-Accra services (Punch)
Air Peace has announced plans to commence flight services from Lagos and Abuja to Roberts International Airport, Monrovia and from Abuja to Kotoka International Airport, Accra on August 6. The development is coming days after the airline secured the renewal of its International Air Transport Association Operation Safety Audit certificate. According to a statement by the airline’s Corporate Communications Manager, Mr Chris Iwarah, the new routes are part of the third phase of the carrier’s network expansion project on the West Coast of Africa. “Air Peace launched its first regional flight out of Lagos to Accra on February 16, 2017. About a year later on February 19, 2018, the airline added Freetown, Sierra Leone; Banjul, The Gambia and Dakar, Senegal to its route map,” he said. Read more
Police arrest 19 suspected cultists in Lagos (Punch)
The police on Wednesday said they had arrested 19 suspected cultists in Imeke, a suburb of Badagry, Lagos State. SP Samson Akhiromen, the Divisional Police Officer in Badagry, disclosed this when the new District Correspondent of News Agency of Nigeria for the area, Mr Raji Rasak, visited the divisional office. Akhiromen said that the suspects were arrested at about 11 p.m. on July 27 when the suspects were having a meeting to carry out their nefarious activities. According to him, a reliable source from the city gave useful information that led to the arrest of 18 males and one female suspects. Read more
Dad, mum, son held for ‘burglary, theft’ (Nation)
The police have arrested a couple, Uroye and Margaret Teddy, their teenage son, Tega, and his lover, Karima Edom, for alleged burglary and theft. The suspects were said to have broken into 8, Ade Onitiri, Harmony Estate in Langbasa Lagos home of Mrs. Folasade Odunuga. According to the police, Mrs. Odunuga was on a three-month vacation, which started on May 27 when the incident occurred. It was gathered that the suspects looted her car and other household items after entering her house from the ceiling. Edom, who is said to be victim’s neighbour, allegedly informed Tega that Mrs Odunuga was away from home, laying grounds for the burglary. Read more
Lady allegedly pushes boyfriend out of the window during fight over phone (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old lady who allegedly pushed her boyfriend from a window of a storey building in Ajagbandi area of Lagos, while trying to prevent him from searching through her phone. The deceased, Wilson Henry, a Civil Engineering graduate from University of Benin, had his neck and complete spinal cord broken , as he landed on the fence of the building before resting on the septic tank. He died three days later at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital , LASUTH in Ikeja. Vanguard gathered that the suspect, Adaugona Esu, a hair stylist was living in a self- contained room on Origa street with her boyfriend, one Eto, until he traveled outside the country in July 2017. Generator repairer commits suicide in Lagos (Punch)
The residents of Morounfolu Street in the Ogba area of Lagos State have expressed shock over the death of a generator repairer, Olatunji Opadiran, who committed suicide after hanging out with friends. Punch Metro learnt that Opadiran on Monday committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope tied to the hook of a ceiling fan in his apartment. It was gathered that Opadiran had earlier gone out with his friends before coming back to his room around 6pm to carry out the act. One of the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Punch Metro that Opadiran never showed any sign that he was going to commit suicide. Read more
Husband ‘slaps wife to death’ (Nation)
A man, Premie Imafidon, was yesterday brought before an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly slapping his wife, Hope, to death. Imafidon, 47, was arraigned by the police on a temporary one-count charge of murder before Mrs A.O. Ajibade. Prosecuting Sergeant Maria Dauda alleged that the defendant committed the offence at about 7pm on June 15, at 25, Apata Street, Agege, Lagos. Dauda said Imafidon slapped Hope, 42, after a heated argument, and she collapsed. According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. 3D Africa brings HackForGood 2018 to University of Lagos (Guardian)
Youth for Technology Foundation (YTF) will be hosting 3D Africa’s HackForGood 2018 design and prototyping challenge on the campus of the University of Lagos from August 2nd through the 4th. HackForGood is a three-day curriculum and contest that will provide 50 young people from across Nigeria with access to cutting-edge technology, instruction, and mentoring to empower them to develop a functional prototype that addresses the real-world needs of their communities. Ikeja Golf Club unveils 50th anniversary plans (Guardian)
The management of Ikeja Golf Club has announced activities scheduled for the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The announcement was made at a press conference, which held in the Committee Room of the club at Ikeja GRA. According to the club captain, Mr. Bola Temowo, the anniversary celebration, has as theme: “Half a Century of Growing Friendships through Golf.” Among activities scheduled to hold in the coming month as part of the celebrations are a series of golf tournaments, including a Pro-Am tournament.
