Lagos man bags life imprisonment for defiling minor (Punch)
A man, Kazeem Adedayo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice A. Soladoye of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, for sexually assaulting an eleven-year-old girl.
Three prosecuting witnesses testified against the defendant, while two exhibits were presented to the court against him.
Giving details of the incident, the victim(name withheld), who was the second prosecuting witness, said the defendant, whom she identified as Daddy Jamal, inserted his finger in her private part, which caused her great pain and made her cry.
She said sometime in January 2018, her mother asked her and her brother to fetch water. While fetching the water, some of it poured on her body. While trying to clean her body, Adedayo, who was their neighbour, walked up to her and asked to know what happened to her chest. She replied that she had sustained an injury while fetching water. Fake soldiers in court for terrorising Lagos communities (Punch)
Two men, Gabriel Oyewole and Nurudeen Agboola, have been arraigned before the Ogba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly impersonating members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The duo were said to have obtained fake identity cards of the Nigerian Army and terrorised unsuspecting members of the public with arms.
The two defendants were arraigned before Magistrate M.F. Onomusi on three counts of impersonation, forgery, and unlawful possession of arms.
The charges read in part, “That you, Gabriel Oyewole and Nurudeen Agboola, on 10th, 15th and 16th day of August, 2022, around 1735 hours, 1300 hrs and 1725 hrs at Bhojson Roundabout, Ebute-Metta, Alafia Street, Amukoko, and No. 20, Corban Street, Gbangan, Ikorodu, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did impersonate members of the Armed Forces to commit felony. Justice Ayokunle Faji of a Federal High Court in Lagos State has convicted and sentenced a woman, Bilikisu Lawal, who claimed to be battling the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, to one-year imprisonment.
The judge handed down the verdict to Lawal while delivering judgment on a charge of unauthorised dealing in five kilograms of cannabis sativa, aka marijuana.
The convict was charged before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on one count of unauthorised dealing in cannabis sativa.
During the convict’s arraignment, the prosecutor, Femi Adebayo, told the court that she was arrested with the weed on November 2, 2022, at her house at Odofin, Ebute Onijegi Iworo, Badagry, Lagos State. Read more
Lagos scrap collector kills man over argument (Punch)
The family of a 48-year-old car washer, Abayomi Owoseni, has been thrown into mourning after he was stabbed to death by a scrap collector, Wasiu Adeyi, on Babalola Street, Off Freedom Way, Ikate, in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Abayomi was in a heated argument with Adeyi when the latter brought out a knife and stabbed him to death.
The victim’s son, Abiodun, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, said the incident happened on December 1, 2022.
He said, “That day, a man came to my workplace and asked to see me. He said he had been looking for me over something that happened to my father. I was skeptical about what he said and did not want to go with him, but a senior colleague promised to accompany me. Read more
Man arraigned for stealing N1m company equipment (Punch)
A 25-year-old man, David Hunga, has been arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing company equipment estimated at N1.245m.
The defendant was arraigned on two counts of stealing.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Haruna Magaji, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on November 11, 2022, around 3am, at the A & A Global Leasing PC Engineering Close, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
He said the defendant connived with one Aminu Ahmed, a worker of the said company, to steal one Axel, valued at N350,000; one propeller, valued at N 85,000; two turntables, valued at N800,000; and one table cloth, valued at N10,000, all valued at N1,245,000. Read more
Police hunt for killer of ex-Lagos administrator’s son (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the driver that killed Olaolu Mudasiru, the Deputy Managing Director of an investment and asset management firm, Vetiva Capital Management.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Olaolu was killed on Sunday in a hit-and-run accident while cycling with two friends on Bourdilion Road in the Ikoyi area of Lagos.
The Vetiva co-founder was also the first son of a former military administrator of Lagos state, Gbolahan Mudasiru, who died in 2003.
It was gathered that the two others crushed by the fleeing driver were receiving treatment at the Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi. Read more
Ex-defence chief’s son denies beating Lagos motorist (Punch)
A naval officer, Kayode Petinrin, has denied assaulting a motorist identified only as Sola, during an altercation in the CMS area of Lagos State.
Kayode was accused of assaulting Sola after he allegedly damaged the latter’s car while manoeuvring on the Bus Rapid Transit lane last Tuesday.
Sola alleged that when he complained about his damaged car, the officer beat him up.
The complainant had lamented that he was planning to take the car to the palace of the Elegushi for blessings when the incident happened. Read more
15 drug dealers caught in ‘notorious’ Lagos community (Punch)
Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested 15 suspected drug dealers in the Mushin area of Lagos State.
The spokesperson for the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, said the suspects, including two ladies, were arrested last Friday.
He said, “The operatives stormed Akala, a notorious drug hub in the Mushin area of Lagos, arresting no fewer than 15 drug dealers, including two ladies, and seized 1,400 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, among other illicit substances such as heroin, methamphetamine, and 320 bottles of codeine syrup, recovered from them on Friday, December 9.”
Babafemi noted that men of the NDLEA at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, also intercepted parcels of cocaine concealed in different parts of a travel bag brought into Nigeria by a Brazil returnee, Nwadinobi Uchemadu, from Sao Paulo, via Doha on a Qatar Airways flight. Victim laments traffic robbers’ attacks on Gbagada-Oworonshoki bridge (Punch)
Incessant attacks by a group of boys who pretended to be beggars and street hawkers to rob and harm unsuspecting victims, especially drivers, of their valuables along the Oworonshoki/Gbagada bridge, Lagos State, has increased panic and concerns among the users of the road.
A victim, Dr Dayo Adediran, who raised the alarm on Friday, informed City Round that she had had three encounters with a particular six-man gang on the bridge, the latest being Thursday evening.
The veterinary doctor said on one of the occasions, a member of the ferocious gang yanked off her gold earring, leaving her bleeding.
She explained that the gang’s modus operandi seems to be targeting lone female drivers, whom they approach, pretending to be beggars. Read more
Assault: Lagos files criminal charge against Umar, an immigration officer after The Guardian report (Guardian)
Lagos State Ministry of Justice (DPP) has charged Chief Superintendent of Immigration (CSI) Mohammed Nasir Umar to court for criminal trial, following alleged assault on his colleague, Yemi Badru, an official of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The filing of the charges followed The Guardian report, in which Badru said Umar assaulted him on July 30, 2019.
In the suit marked LD/20518C/2022 filed on December 1, 2022, Umar was charged by Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) of Lagos State on two count-charge of assault occasioning harm and assault.
According to information obtained by The Guardian, yesterday, the alleged offence of assault occasioning harm is contrary to section 173 of the criminal law, CH. C17. Vol 3, Laws of Nigeria, 2015.
Also, the offence of assault was also contrary to Section 174(e) of the criminal law, CH.C17. Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015. Read more
NDLEA arrests Brazil returnee with parcels of cocaine, others in powdered milk at Lagos airport (Guardian)
A Brazil returnee, Nwadinobi Charles Uchemadu from Sao Paulo, Brazil, via Doha on a Qatar Airways flight, has been intercepted with parcels of cocaine concealed in different parts of a travel bag brought into Nigeria by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
Uchemadu was arrested on Monday, December 5, at the Lagos airport, during inward clearance of passengers on the Qatar airways flight following the discovery of three parcels of cocaine weighing 2.70 kilogrammes factory sealed in parts of his travel bag.
Spokesperson for Agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement, yesterday, said NDLEA operatives equally intercepted cans of powdered milk, baby food and beverages used to conceal 3.4 kilogrammes of Cannabis sativa going to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), at the Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) export shed of the airport same day.
According to Babafemi, a freight agent, Ewelike Chibuike Cyril, who presented the consignment for export was subsequently arrested. Read more
Lagos: Man allegedly orders househelp to unleash dogs on wife (Guardian)
A Director at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Olalekan Onikoyi, has been accused of ordering his househelp to unleash dogs on his wife, Mrs. Emily Onikoyi at their home in Fadeyi Street, Igbogbo, Ikorodu,Lagos.
The Guardian learnt that the couple has been having unending marital issues for years and that the man recently served his wife a divorce letter.
In disturbing pictures sent to The Guardian, the woman was seen with injuries and being attended to at the hospital.
Narrating what happened, the son of Mrs. Onikoyi, Enajero Darlington Eguriase, said: “They have about six dogs in their compound, the dogs are under the custody of one boy named Clifford. The boy is like an errand boy in the compound, and is neither related to the man, nor to my mother. Read more
