Islamic cleric caught on camera defiling five-year-old girl in Lagos (Punch)
Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested an Islamic cleric, Abdulsalam Salaudeen, for allegedly defiling a five-year-old girl in Lagos.
The 43-year-old cleric, who was supposed to be teaching the victim Islamic studies, was said to have been caught having carnal knowledge of her through a video footage that was reportedly presented to the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, CSP Chike Oti, said in a statement on Wednesday that Imohimi, who was saddened by the incident, dispatched undercover operatives, who arrested the culprit and handed him over to the gender section for detailed investigation. Read more
Police burst robbery gang (Nation)
The police have smashed a six-man robbery gang, who allegedly specialised in selling stolen vehicles as scrap at Ladipo market in Mushin, Lagos.
The suspects were nabbed by the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
They are Hycient Lawrence, 25; Ernest Ogaba, 30; Clement Ochei, 38; Afeez Akinsoya, 41; Victor Ineh, 32 and Lucky Mgbejume, 28. Read more
Officials arrest drug gang members in Ikoyi Prison (Punch)
Officials of the Nigerian Prisons Service attached to the Ikoyi Prison in Lagos have arrested members of a three-man drug syndicate for attempting to sell marijuana to inmates of the prison.
Punch Metro learnt that the incident, which happened around 8.30am on Sunday, involved 22-year-old Ikuomola Abolade, who was arrested when he was trying to escape; an inmate, who is standing trial for alleged robbery, Sodeeq Yunusa; and an unidentified person, who is presently at large.
It was gathered that the suspects were arrested through a 10-year-old boy, who is part of the Intelligence and Monitoring Committee comprising selected officials of the prison, their wives, the drug unit and the police, which was set up to monitor the activities of intruders in the prison facility. Guard charged with biting colleague (Nation)
A guard, Amos Jettus, who allegedly punched his colleague and bit his fingers, was Wednesday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court.
Jettus, 25, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and breach of the peace before Mrs. Oluwatoyin Ojuromi.
The police alleged that the incident occurred about 11pm on December 26 at Oluloya Street, Ajao Estate, Anthony Village, Lagos. Read more
Lagos CP dismisses three policemen for corruption (Punch)
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, has dismissed three policemen found guilty of corrupt practices after being tried at the command’s Provost Section.
Punch Metro had reported that Imohimi ordered the arrest and trial of Inspector Amiete, Sergeant Gbemunu Samuel, Sergeant Afolabi Oluwaseun and Corporal Adigun Omotayo for alleged corrupt practices and shoddy investigation into the case of one Theodore Ifunanya, who was arrested on suspicion of involvement in armed robbery.
It was also reported that the said the officers, who recovered the sum of CFA350,000 from Ifunanya during investigation, had refused to release the money to him after he was exonerated. Read more
Security guard allegedly beats colleague to death (Vanguard)
An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday ordered a security guard, Usman Abdulkareem to be remanded at the Ikoyi Prison for allegedly killing his colleague.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. Kusanu said the accused would remain remanded, pending the outcome of legal advice by the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The accused, who is being tried for murder, was alleged to have hit his colleague, Augustine Musa, 34, whom he accused of gossiping about him, a development he said got him infuriated. Read more
Police nab two armed robbery suspects, recover stolen property (Punch)
Police operatives from the Zonal Intervention Squad of the Zone 2 Police Command, covering Lagos and Ogun states, have arrested two ex-convicts of no fixed addresses for involvement in armed robbery.
The suspects, Oseni Uman, 34, and Taiwo Orogbemi, 46, were said to have been arrested on December 31, 2018, around 9.30am in Ogere Remo, Ogun State.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 2 Command, CSP Dolapo Badmos, on Wednesday, noted that the operatives, who were on visibility policing, intercepted a brown Toyota Sienna SUV. Read more
32-year-old man accused of sodomy (Nation)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court Wednesday remanded a 32-year-old man, Victor Martin, in Kirikiri Prisons for alleged sodomy.
He was said to have had sex with a 10-year-old boy through the anus.
Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi said he should be kept behind bars, pending advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Martin, who lives at Shasha, Lagos, is facing a one-count charge of defilement. Read more
Loss prevention officer allegedly steals N4.2m company’s goods (Punch)
A 31-year-old woman, Stellamaris Ebhohimen, has been arrested by the police for allegedly stealing products valued at N4.2 million, which belong to the company she works for.
Punch Metro gathered that Ebhohimen works as a loss prevention officer at Hubmart Stores Limited in Lagos.
It was alleged that Ebhohimen and another staff member from the loss prevention section were seen on a closed-circuit television footage stealing goods from the shelves. Read more
