Why Lagos is checking crimes through data record — AG (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem last week disclosed how the state government planned to eradicate crime in the state in a novel way through many innovations embarked upon by the state. Chiefly among them is the establishment of the Lagos Crime Data Register, State DNA and Forensic Center and establishment of the Special Offences and Sexual Crimes Court among others. Speaking at the 2018 ministerial press briefing held in Ikeja, the Attorney-General disclosed that over 8,000 criminals have been captured in the crime data register, aimed at aiding justice delivery in Lagos. According to the government, the register has helped in monitoring cases between the state’s Ministry of Justice, Nigeria Police and the Prisons Service. Read more
Lagos rescues 1,680 beggars from streets (Punch)
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said it had removed no less than 1,680 beggars and mentally-challenged persons from Lagos streets in the last one year. It added that about 162 children were taken off the streets in the same period. The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri, stated this at a press conference to mark the third anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, adding that 1,299 of the destitute persons had been rehabilitated and reunited with their families. Dabiri explained that of the 162 children rescued, 62 were males while 100 were females. Read more
Lagos moves to end plastic pollution, dangles monetary incentives (Nation)
Lagos State Government has urged residents to be proactive in the fight to end plastic pollution in the state with a view to protect and preserve the earth. In a statement to mark the 2018 World Earth Day, the state Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, while urging Lagosians to be protective of the earth as it is a blessing to mankind, said:“The Earth is a blessing to mankind because it is our source of water, food, medicine, and shelter.” Durosinmi-Etti explained that the World Earth Day, celebrated every April 22, was a day to appreciate and demonstrate support for environmental protection. He said it had been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues such as climate change, marine pollution, global warming, and wildlife crime, among others. Read more
Lagos enhances transit payment system, launches EMV Contactless card (Vanguard)
Over 500,000 daily commuters on the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system can now board buses using a contact-less card payment system. The system allows commuters who ride on BRT buses to make payments via their Lagos Connect contactless cards powered by Farepay that have either been pre-loaded or linked to a funded bank account. Powered by Lagos State, LAMATA, Primero Transport Limited and Sterling Bank Plc, the enhanced electronic payment system was launched Thursday at the Sterling Bank, House, Marina, Lagos in partnership with leading global payment and technology companies – Mikroelektronica, MasterCard, E-Purse Systems, Monet Plus, NIBSS, Epay-plus and SecureID in Lagos. Justice ministry, LIRS generated N107.4m for Lagos government, says AG (Guardian)
Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem said the Ministry of Justice has generated N107, 432,862 million for the state government.He disclosed this at Alausa during a ministerial press briefing to mark the third year anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration.He said the money was generated in collaboration with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Services (LIRS). Kazeem explained that the ministry was working with the state judiciary, police command, prison services and other stakeholders towards efficient and effective justice system. Read more
Ibidapo-Obe, Nwani, Durotoye, others canvass qualitative learning (Guardian)

In a bid to enhance national development and support Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in the country, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has concluded arrangements for the 2018 research conference and fair. Chairman of the Conference, Prof. Abayomi Okanlawon said the fair is to create collaboration between academics and entrepreneurs for the benefit of the populace.Okanlawon said the 13th annual research conference and fair, with the theme, “Resource utilisation and sustainable development,” is scheduled to hold between August 28 and 30 at the Jelili Omotola Hall. Light-up Lagos: Siemens to support developers (Punch)
Siemens Nigeria has expressed its readiness to partner the Lagos State Government towards the realisation of the Light-Up Lagos project. The company also said it had put in place customised products and financing solutions for the developers that would be selected by the government. The Vice President, Power and Gas, Nigeria, Siemens, Mr. Nasir Giwa, said at a briefing that the Siemens’ mobile unit would be a key solution. He said the SGT-A45 TR mobile unit was designed to address the growing market for fast power. According to him, with an electrical generating capacity of up to 44 megawatts, the aeroderivative gas turbine is packaged for rapid deployment and can be installed in less than two weeks. Read more
Pharmacists seek end to health workers’ strike, deaths in hospitals (Guardian)
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to end the ongoing nationwide strike by the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA). This followed concerns over the large number of deaths recorded since the health workers commenced their strike in the country on Monday, April 18, 2018.PSN’s letter to President Buhari was dated April 23, 2018 with reference number 2018/025/PR/PSN and titled: Request To Halt The Spate Of Strikes In The Health Sector.Among other things, it demanded the immediate adjustment of the Consolidated Health Workers Salary Structure (CONHESS) scale like the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) as agreed in 2014 and 2017. NAF trains barrack youths on fish farming (Nation)
To boost local production of fish and encourage entrepreneurship among barrack youths, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Wednesday empowered 100 youths on fish farming. The empowerment was facilitated by the Logistics Command of the NAF in Lagos under the Base Youths Empowerment Through Agriculture (BYETA) programme initiated by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. Flagging off the programme, Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Toyin Suara, said it was in line with the government’s vision on food security and job creation. Read more
APCON gives unlicensed Advertising Agencies Ultimatum to Comply (ThisDay)
Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) has resolved to take on advertising agencies that are operating in Nigeria but are not licensed. The council has therefore issued a warning that agencies that are not re-licensed by Tuesday, next week will face the music. APCON which is yet to have a board after three years due to the delay by the Presidency, also warned that advertisers who patronise and engage un-licensed agencies for business are working against the law and will be prosecuted. To avoid confusion on licensed or un-licensed firms, the Council through its Ag Registrar/CEO Ijedi Iyoha promised to make the list public. She also assured that the council will inform Advertising Agencies of Nigeria, ADVAN and other relevant stakeholders on its resolve to prosecute un-licensed agencies after May 1, 2018. Read more
Homosexuality: LASG takes Custody of Toddlers as Parents Trade Blame (ThisDay)
The Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development yesterday took custody of two toddlers over suspicion of homosexual behaviour, while their parents traded blame on who influenced the kids. The three-year-old twin kids were taken from their mother, Patience Isua, after she sent her estranged husband, Emmanuel Ikanta, a video footage of the boys committing acts of homosexuality. Even the video clip which captured the twins frolicking was brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, who visited the twins’ mother’s home in Ajah in the company of officials of the ministry where the children were subsequently withdrawn from their mother. Forensic evidence reveals Danish husband killed wife, daughter – LASG (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said all is set for the prosecution of a Danish national, Peter Nielsen for the murder of his Nigerian wife, Zainab, and three-year-old daughter, Petra, in Banana Island area of Ikoyi on April 5, 2018. The State Government, in a statement by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, said forensic investigation into the matter revealed overwhelming and compelling evidence to the effect that the suspect killed his wife and daughter. Lagos cab driver in court over missing $3,600 (Punch)
The police in Lagos have brought a cab driver, Olajide Stephen, before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogba after a sum of $3,600 (about N1.2m) belonging to his passenger got missing. The police arraigned Stephen on three counts to which he pleaded not guilty. Punch Metro learnt that one Mrs. Olamide Musa had hired the 39-year-old driver to take her and her husband to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, on June 18, 2017, where the husband would board a flight to the United Kingdom. Policeman remanded for ‘sexual assault’ (Nation)
A Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, yesterday remanded a policeman, Sylvester Shamaki, following his arraignment for sexual assault. Shamaki, 29, allegedly fingered a 22-year-old woman. He was arraigned on one-count charge of sexual assault before Mrs O.J. Oghere. Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye told the court that Shamaki committed the offence at about 6:30pm on March 14, at 9, Adebisi Tolani Street, Medina Estate, Gbagada, Lagos. Olaluwoye said the defendant assaulted the complainant (name withheld) by forcing himself on her and penetrating her with his fingers. Read more
