Such basic common sense advice, Tara, devoid of pontification or polemic. Unfortunately, a great many people act out of ignorance, arrogance or from optimism bias – that sense of “it can’t happen to me”, even when the evidence is starkly to the contrary. Why else would there be a need to enforce a directive such as the one prevalent in today’s climate. Common sense is not so common. I have very little time for people like these.

The flip side, though, is when people are forced to take a decision when they are between the devil and the deep blue sea, between a rock and a hard place. When they are forced by circumstances seemingly beyond their control to make decisions they otherwise would not have made. A self employed person, who, not knowing from where their means of livelihood will come, goes out to work in what may not be considered “essential” as defined by the guidelines, but to them makes a difference between life and death. Or the person who decides that death is preferable to derision, or who stares a stark existence and decides death is death, in whatever way it comes. Death from complications brought about by Covid-19 or death from starvation. It is this category of people I feel for at a time like this.

At the risk of pontificating, times like these call for Marx’s so called “opium of the people”. Faith in something beyond oneself may serve to deaden compulsive action, while the brain does its work of figuring out survival tactics that can best be deployed for the longer term.
